Help me beat my DM :)

When you try to Gate in your Solars, why would they have to attack the dragon for you?
Umm, because he says so? The spell forces them to do what he says if it's a short action such as a combat.

Until the last round of the spells duration - then they get to act as they will... Which could lead to an interesting situation. If you kill the Dragon and then your Solars kill you, is that a draw?

Not so. The creature departs at the end of the spell.

I was under the impression that the various Summon Monster spells did this but that Gate, because it allows much more powerful creatures to step through, did not actually compel them to do something they wouldn't ordinarily do? That is you have to attempt to Gate in a creature from a plane that would actually want to do the thing you wanted done, or at least be willing to bargain to do so.... I could be wrong in 3E on this, as I said, I don't have it in front of me...

Remember kiddies, any spell that the dragon wants to cast on itself would have to penetrate its own spell resistance (page 82 of the DMG)! To lower your own spell resistance, you must take a standard action. The dragon certainly could not take a standard action to lower his spell resistance when his contingency goes off, because it would not be his turn in the first place. Thus, a dragon might not contingency a heal, or any other spell that affects his being. The dragon could start the combat with his SR down, but that would cost him a standard action. Would it be worth the dragon's time to do this?

From the SRD

This spell summons an outsider (extraplanar creature) that attacks the character's enemies. It appears where the character designates and acts immediately, on the character's turn. It attacks the character's opponents to the best of its ability. If the character can communicate with the outsider, the character can direct it not to attack, to attack particular enemies, or to perform other actions. Summoned creatures act normally on the last round of the spell and disappear at the end of their turn.

Emphasis mine. I read this too mean that the summoned creature can act according to their alignment and not the summoners instructions on the last round of the spell.

So Solars who have been instructed to attack a Celestial Gold Dragon will attempt to destroy a summoner who gives such a command.

Greymarch.....not trying to be an a hole or anything but the very next sentece says that spell resistance never interferes with your own spells abilties or items....sorry..the dragon does not need to drop his SR.

Dave...the passage is there to show that your creatures can act on the last round of the spell , not to do their own thing on the last round of the spell.

Observation: If you read the title of this thread too near the title of the "My Wife Got Me BOVD for Christmas" thread, your jaw drops and you do a double take because you think you just read "Help Me Beat My Wife".

Sorry for the intrusion. Carry on.
