Re: I think you're misinterpreting

Feel free to thwack WotC if this is not the case, or if it is the case and they just explained it very very badly.

(FWIW, I think I'll call this fourth teer of abiltiies "Ordinary".)

Well, thwack, then. DMG pg 289: three type of abilities, Ex, Su, Sp. The Ex abilities are the "normal" abilities. LLV, per the MM, is specifically an (Ex) ability.

Those abilities are listed in the traits section of each creature type, (animals' LLV, frex) so you could make a loose case for giving them -- except for the fact that LLV and the like are specifically listed as Special Qualities, which are specifically prohibited.

Allowing the traits in an animal decription wouldn't be an unreasonable house rule, though. Maybe for 4E we'll redefine Ex abilities, and add an "ordinary" category.

What tricks are listed in the Animal Companion section of the DMG?

They're now in the PHB under Handle Animal, with training DCs:

Attack
Come
Defend
Down
Fetch
Guard
Heel
Perform
Seek
Stay
Track
Work

The DMG section now only has the notes for DMs handling companions -- a welcome adjustment; the infor should have been in the PHB all along.

So when an animal companion advances with the Druid and gains more tricks, does the Druid have to spend time and hit a DC in order to teach the new tricks, or are they more automatic (assumes that, through the course of adventuring, they're always working on tricks, and they just kick in at those level bumps)?

Could you list the Paladin's 1st and 2nd level spells?... actually I would be interested in all of them, but I don't want to make you type too much. You could explain the ones that are new, or you can just list them and I'll ask about the new ones. Thanks.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Are there any mechanics for teaching a trained animal to wear armor?

No mechanics; it isn't addressed under Handle Animal, Barding, or the Animal section.

I'd just assume they're "proficient", personally.

Assuming "proficiency" works, I suppose, but with feats and skills not assigned to all creatures, I'd think they might need to spend a feat.

EDIT: Without the feat, they could still use armor (barding), but would suffer non-proficiency penalties. This would not affect the animals in many cases.

What is the DR of the fiendish and celestial template? From what I can tell, it could be anything but adamantine.

5/magic, for both

I think the full list is in Compiled Revisions; come back with specific questions.

Bonus tricks are free; no training time or Handle Animal checks required.

Could you go over the handle animal rules a little bit? In 3.0, when a druid acquired a new companion, it could do little beyond attacking creatures it regarded as enemies until the druid had spent two months training it. I saw you just posted that bonus tricks are free (requiring no training time or checks); do animals start off with any "bonus tricks"? What's the training time for non-bonus tricks?

Daniel
PS Thanks so much for posting all these tidbits!

Sigh...

Sorry about all the Wildshape questions, but do Druids continue to receive the racial bonuses of the class they turn into? In that case, your keen nose and eyes do help you...
