i don't think your p.c. choice is your problem..

Nor do I. I'm trying (for reasons that escape me) to work off the assumption that this was just a bad day for them for whatever reason.

I'd go Rogue. High stats of Dex and Int. Tumble, Hide, Move Silent, Spot, etc. are a must. Then I'd make sure to max out Use Magic Device! Get Spell Craft and Decipher Script to at least levels to provide their synergy bonus. Then get yourself wands and scrolls to use from range! This is very fun and effective!

While this isn't really a consideration at 1st, don't forget that shuriken are really designed for poison use. Even cheap poison is quite deadly when the opponent is making 4 or 5 saves against it a round. Just something to consider for the future if you go with the Thrown weapon Rogue.

If you really want to be cheap go 1st level Rogue then take one level in Cleric. Make your first feat Skill Focus Use Magic Device and your next feat Greater Skill Focus Use Magic Device. Cast the Wieldskill spell (1st level Magic of Faerun, I think) to have a Use Magic Device check of +4(feats)+10(spell)+4(Cha bonus)+6(ranks at 3rd) +4 (synergy bonus from Decipher Script and Spellcraft) to give you a +28 UMD check. Just think with a roll of 9 you could fire off a 9th level spell from a scroll. Buy ray spell scrolls and improved invis to get max effectiveness from sneak attack. Or just find a good ray style wand. Continue as a Rogue past 2nd level.

I'd put the 18 into Cha, the next highest into Dex, then the next highest into Con or Int. The bad part about this is it willn't work until 2nd level then willn't work fully until your second feat.

Plus, many DMs are liable to have powerful enemies use evil weapons that give negative levels to good wielders. Laugh as you run around in a evil cloak of the archmagi (that the DM didn't consider as treasure because he didn't think anyone could use it.)

Of course, this relies on a good deal of wealth on behalf of the character. It depends on how close or far your DM sticks to the treasure guidelines and how easy it is to buy scrolls/wands.

You're right. I misread randcortin's post.

Did you? It was a rules question, not a rhetorical statement. Can you reuse thrown weapons like daggers and shuriken, and if so, where does it say so in the rules so I can point it out to my DM?

Thrown weapons don't break on a successful hit. Thus they're fully recoverable. This is balanced by the low range increment as compared to more fragile bolts and arrows that go farther.

I've decided to go with a wizard modeled after Forrester's suggestion. I'll call him....Forrester. ;)

:D

Now that's a helluva character name!

I was thinking about this a little more -- you want to go specialist bcs of the extra spells. And you've got a bard already, who can cover the Enchantment side.

So: Aburation specialist, with Enchantment forbidden. (At the average level of your party, the best low-level Enchantment spell, Sleep, isn't quite as necessary).

Always take Shield at 1st level, Prot. Arrows at 2nd, Dispel Magic or Magic Circle at 3rd -- should protect you from enough nastiness.

And 18 Int, of course, not 17 Int, so you can up your skill points. (If you really want to, you can up Con from 17 to 18 at 4th level).

This assumes that your DM is nice enough to allow some down time occasionally to scribe scrolls and/or spells into your spellbook. If he's one of those "The Party Is Always On The Run" GMs, you might want to talk him into allowing the Monte Cook sorcerer. YMMV.

(I have a bad feeling that after all of this, poor Forrester is just going to die in the first encounter :) Augh!)

I was very tempted to name him Fyrraestaenyrwyn. :D

Good point. It would dovetail with the utter paranoia I'm going to play him with too.

I'm ahead of you here. 18 Int and Spellcasting Prodigy.

Sometimes we're constantly on the run. Sometimes we're settled. Depends on the phase of the moon, I think.
