Help me design a Weapon of Legacy.

My ideas so far are as follows. The item will be, in its nonlegacy form, a Ring of Protection +1, that will gain abilities such as focused blasts of force, creation of temporary constructs, and flight. The inspiration behind this item comes from the Green Lantern; cheesy, yes, but with undeniable potential. The story/rituals are not the part I need help with, partially because I am using a homebrew campaign setting that differs rather a lot from Greyhawk, and I don't want to explain it all here, because my players might read this thread, and some necessary information is information that they are not permitted to know. What I need assistance with is the abilities, the timing for said abilities, and the associated penalties. I'm going to design this for use by a Psionic character, by the way. The WIP name for it is "The Golden Band of Di".

Ideas, if you would be so kind?

[Edit]: Actually, should you be interested in the Campaign Setting, I have a pbWiki for it. It is not even 50% complete with basic information, but it's getting there. The URL is http://obscura.pbwiki.com

I'd start out by considering extant magic items, like a Ring of the Ram, the Cube of Force, and the various conjuration spells, like the Orb, Bigby's and Ottiluke's series.

That's a good idea. I would like the various powers that will be unlocked to improve as the basic AC bonus increases, but I'm not sure how for the more abstract powers. For the focused energy blasts, I'm thinking either a flat damage roll, with a bonus to Attack and Damage rolls, or 1d6 or 1d8 per +1 bonus. For the flight, it would be more 10 feet fly speed per +1 bonus, and maneuverability would increase as well (from clumsy at +1 to perfect at +5).

Maybe I should scrap the idea of having the abstract ones improve, actually; it might end up being too complicated to rule or run. If anyone has any suggestions on how to do that, though, I would love to hear them.

I was thinking as far as focused energy blasts, it might be more fun (and make the player think a little more) if the lower level ones didn't actually do damage, just worked like tractor or repulsor beams of sci-fi lore...pushing or pulling with great strength...or grabbing even.

It would be sort of like doing long ranged bull-rushes, grapples, disarms, etc.

Only the more powerful ones would be able to do physical damage, probably of the bludgeoning/crushing variety.

Also, consider the ability to create an area of effect with tiny bubbles of force. Instant marble field!

That's actually a really good idea. I was a little bit worried about that one becoming too powerful, but if I were to slow the damage progression like that... it would be both flavorful and useful, while not being game-breakingly strong.

That would be something I would rule on the spot under the abstract creation/force exertion ability, which I still need to give a thematic name.

I have designed a trio of spells for my Argent Savant character which essentially create varied volumes of mutable force (you're able to change the shape of the force area that is created as necesary). It sounds like they might be ideal for a green lantern-style ring. Email me at carg72 at gmail dot com if you're interested.
