faerun go boom yet? :D

Almost, but not quite yet.

Last session, the PCs were visited at their stronghold by one of their allies from Tilverton, a Harper ranger. She told the PCs that Tilverton had been overrun by a horde of trolls and rust monsters. Tilverton was in ruins, but she knew the location of a Netherese wizard's tower within the Stonelands that may have magic to fight the rust monsters.

The PCs journeyed there, encountered a strange blue robed figure that warned them "not to return the flame". The PCs journeyed onward and encountered a group of Shades for the first time (although the characters do not know those were Shades), explored and escaped the Netherese tower and finally returned home.

A few days later, the PCs witnessed a rain of fire appearing all over the sky and large flashes appearing as far as the eye could see, and the faint sounds of explosions could be heard in the distance. The PCs did not know what to make of this, but decided to go to Tilverton to check out the damage. While they were there, they discovered that it was in ruins, with the streets filled with corpses. The session ended, when night fell, the corpses of the dead began to rise in the ruined streets of Tilverton.

Next session, if the PCs decide to check out the rest of Faerun, they should be pleasantly surprised to find that many of the well known cities and countries have been liberally peppered with fragments of a second Slaad Spawning Stone. What this means is that there should be Slaad running all over the place.

I can't wait for the PCs to return a particular magical item to a temple of Sune. Doing so will release a half-fiend (or Infernal) sorceress with multiple "gate" spells who will begin to open gates to the Abyss, with demons pouring into Faerun.

How to destroy the Realms?

First, something should happen to Elminster, something that causes him to go insane - permanently. Maybe Manshoon finally defeats his hated enemy, but instead of killing him, he renders him permanently insane. This is not just cruelty on his part, it is all part of the plan. With Elminster gone mad, the other Chosen of Mystra must rush about the Realms, trying to locate the Old Mage and repair any damage he has done - ans since he's the second most powerful Wizard in the Realms, that's a LOT of damage.

But couldn't Mystra just cut off his access to the Weave? you ask.
Why, yes, she could.
But what if Shar has invested Elminster with the ability to tap into the Shadow Weave?
So. You have Elminster running amok, and the Chosen trying to find him. What happens next?
Glorious Chaos. The Zhentarim prepare to invade the Dalelands, and then push their way south. But with what army? Why, with the army from their secret staging ground of Vaasa.
Vaasa?, you ask. Oh yes, Vaasa. And they have dragons with their army. The same dragons that have been flocking to the ruins of Castle Perilous, the result of being summoned there by a very evil, very powerful being - the Banelich.
So. Elminster insane. The Chosen running around like headless chickens. An invading army approaching the Dalelands, accompanied by a flight of dragons.
Eventually, the Zhents will control all lands north of the Dragonmere and the Pirate Isles, and west of the Dragon Reach. Thay will have Aglarond, and will begin looking northwards towards Thesk, The Great Dale, and possibly even Narfell.
Some of the Chosen fall - either battling the Zhentarim, the Dragons, or even Elminster himself. At the least, Dove, Storm, and the Symbul all perish in the chaos. If your especially sadistic, you can have the Symbul killed while trying to fight Elminster. :]
Strangely enough, Khelben is strangely absent from the battles, though Laeral immediately goes to the aid of her sisters.
More could be said, and done, but I'll leave that to you.

I'd suggest that you gather all of your Forgotten Realms books together, and put a match to them. Hey presto, the Forgotten Realms are destroyed.

Alternatively, you could shred them all, or rip them up, or eat them (though I wouldn't advise that). You could even use them instead of toilet paper.

When you're done, find a better game world.

Antimatter... no, wait, that's too high tech.

Antimagic? Looks just like magic, but explodes violently when it touches normal magic. Whatever you do, don't use Identify on it.

Have Elminister go insane, sure, but the reason he went iinsane is because of something from CoC. Make him read the necronomicon or something. Then you could throw in Nyarlathotep, even if you don't want any of the others. Just one is enough to destory it, especially with everything else that is going on.

Amen!

slaad spawning stone--excellent! now turn a blue slaad into a colossal monster :D

fooey with subtle plots & stuff. mad mad chaos & insanity is the way to go. i agree w/ slife, have elminster read the necronomicon, or "al azif", the original. if he's so smart he can read the original arabic and go bonkers faster. oh wait, that's what comprehend languages is for

and find a better game world? now you can build it yourself from the mad ashes of faerun. you've got the maps & (fresh) ruins. go to town! sounds fun to me (but then again, i've always loved CoC games too).

Well, my favorites are Hârn & Glorantha, though I know that they are not to everyones taste.

IMO:
Hârn takes makes the idea of ‘medieval fantasy’ logical & sensible. But it is low monster & low magic, so most folks don’t like it.
Glorantha takes the idea of ‘the gods exist’ forward and the resulting game world is, er, different.
But I’m not going to bore you with a sales pitch, they’re easy enough to find.

I also like the world of Pendragon, and the world of Ars Magica, but then that’s where I live!

There must be other well-crafted worlds out there, worlds which don’t simply rely on more monsters, more races and more spiky-death mutant types to gloss over the cracks in the background. Are there? I’m genuinely interested in finding them
