Help me fill this Pantheon

Thoughts? Yup.

LG The Father, giver of order, god of order and culture
NG The Mother, giver of life, god of growing things and healers
CG The Brother, maker of war, god of right and just conflict
LN The Sister, enforcer of laws, god of law and applied learning
N The Sage, seeker of knowledge, god of Fairness and balance
CN The Cousin, seeker of a way, god of travelers and merchants
LE The Lord, freedom's thief, god of tyrants and evil rulers
NE The Deceiver, truth's thief, god of criminals and wicked deception
CE The Destroyer, life's thief, god of murders and the dead

I changed the good ones to family to represent closeness having to work together etc, I did want to do an evil extended family but it didn't work. I changed the father to god of order as lawful doesn't mean they obey laws (unless they care more about law then good) like LN gods.

Cousins are some of the closest but still distant relatives, they seem to be the ones that lead you astray, and are wanderers. The lord oppresses people.

How about these alternatives.

LG: The Benovlent Despot, loves all sentient life, but exepects them to act towards him or her with the submisiveness of sheep.
NG: The Giver, always ready to give to any one in need, almost a total pacifist.
CG: The Liberator, defender of liberty and justice, all but incapable of tact.
LN: The Faceless Bureaucrat, also known as the Eternal Paper Pusher. The greatest act of faith a priest of his can perform is mindless paper work.
N: The Sleeper, god of apithy.
CN: Bill the Cat. Druged up, burned out hippie cat.
LE: The Ultra Puritan, he always fears, in the deepest, darkest receses of his heart that someone somewhere is actually having fun.
NE: The Kleptomaniac, no further explanation needed.
CE: The Mad Butcher, the greatest sociopathic killer in the universe.

Here is what I propose:

  • LG: The Father, the Guardian, giver of order, god of civilization and culture
    (Civilization*, Earth, Protection)
  • NG: The Mother, the Soother, giver of life, goddess of nature and life
    (Animal, Healing, Plant)
  • CG: The Lost Son, the Wanderer, giver of paths, god of travels
    (Sun, Travel, Water)
  • LN: The Second Son, the Smith, master of tools, god of crafts and applied learning
    (Craft*, Fire, Trade*)
  • TN: The First Born, the Sage, master of knowledge, goddess of lore
    (Air, Knowledge, Magic)
  • CN: The First Son, the Warrior, master of war, god of defense
    (Luck, Strength, War)
  • LE: The Dark Son, the Despoiler, freedom's thief, god of tyrants and agression
    (Hatred*, Tyranny*, War)
  • NE: The Dark Mother, the Deceiver, truth's thief, goddess of criminals and wicked deception
    (Illusion*, Madness*, Trickery)
  • CE: The Dark Father, the Destroyer, life's thief, god of murders and the dead
    (Death, Destruction, Disease*)

Comments:
  • There, you have two families, one is good, the other is rotten to the core.
  • All the Good gods are giver of something, all the Evil gods are thieves of something. Between them, the neutral gods are masters of something.
  • Also, although the neutral gods are all sons or daughters, nothing says of which family.
  • I swapped around the god of travel and that of war. I don't think one could reasonnably have a CG god of war if he's the only god of war. To balance everything, the wargod is now CN, and both the LG and LE gods have a hinted secondary aspects as patron of war (the Father's title as the Guardian, the Despoiler's patronage of aggression).
  • Still in the balancing thing, you'll notice the alignment of both fathers are the exact opposites, and the alignment of both mothers, too, are the exact opposites.
  • The title of "Lost Son" for the god of travels is voluntarily enigmatic. Why is he lost? Well, so that he could have become a wanderer trying to find his way. But also, because maybe he was cast out by his parents who consider him lost -- was he the son of the Dark family?
  • Also, as the god of travels, I made him the sun god. Why? Well, the sun endlessly travels, too. The sun is the Wanderer's lantern, with which he lights his path in his endless quest. And why a god of water? A god of travel is going to be popular with sailors.
  • I gave everyone three domains (plus the alignment domains they can have). Elemental domains were harsh to assign. Water for the god of travels (to reflect sea travel), Fire to the god of Craftsmen (to reflect the forges and ovens and give him a Promethean feel, as it's the mastery of fire that allowed to master so many crafts). Air for the goddess of magic and lore, because of the ivory towers, the ephemeral quality of lore, because the wise ones are often stargazers, and because dreaming of reaching the sky has inspired all sorts of sorceries. Earth for the Father and protector of civilization, for the fields worked by peasants, the stone walls shielding the cities, the stones used to build houses and castles and roads.
  • Some domains, marked with a *, come from other sources than the PH, or need to be made. Most of the "missing" domains come from the FRCS. If you want, I can write-up equivalents to these domains.

It sounds very Martinesque, was A Song of Ice and Fire an inspiration?

If not Martin's gods are: the Mother, the Father, the Warrior, the Maid, the Stranger, the Smith, and the Crone.

It's important the names really nail the feel of each of the gods. Perhaps:

The Father (Emperor, King)
The Mother (Maiden, Crone?)
The Warrior (Knight, Captain?)
The Smith (Mason?, Sailor?)
The Sage (Magician, Hermit, Fool?)
The Wanderer (Outlander, Wayfarer?)
The Master (Jailer?)
The Deceiver (Trickster?)
The Destroyer (Reaver, Executioner?)

If you want to go for a cohesive pantheon, as opposed to standard good vs. evil war among the gods, you'd want each of the to embody some virtue or have some sort of protection within their grasp. So there's a reason for a peasant to prey to each of them at some time.

Yeah, the Game of Thrones books were a partial inpiration for this pantheon. I wanted to extened it to each of the 9 aligments. I like the idea of there beign a reason to pray to each. Overall I was thinking that this was a neutral society on the Good/Evil spectrum, that saw the need for balance in the world and thus has dominant religion that showed that balance. The society itself was probablly LN, but that maybe changing in the chaos that follows a lost war.
