Help me find a good Christmas present for my dad.

Dark Jezter

First Post
Well, I've got most of my Christmas shopping done already, except there's one person I still need to buy for: my dear old dad. Frankly, I have no idea what to get him, so I decided to come to the EN World boards for help. :)

So here's some stuff to help you out: My dad likes to watch movies, but he already owns all of his favorite ones on DVD so I don't think I'll be getting him any of those. He isn't much of a reader, although he does occasionally find a novel that catches his interest. He also dosen't fish or hunt much anymore.

However, my dad loves things like tools and innovative little gadgets. A few years ago, he got an electronic thermometer tool where you stick a sensor on the side of your house and it transmits the temperature to an LCD display inside your home, and he absolutely loves it. He's also gotten a couple of multi-tools over the years that are always on his belt because he uses them frequently at both work and home. He even has his own workshop where he keeps all his tools and uses them to work on home and automotive projects. Basically, if you can find a gift that Tim "the Toolman" Taylor would like, my dad would probably like it too. :D

Other subjects that interest him are astronomy (he still loves to take out his telescope on clear summer nights), college football (particularly Brigham Young University, his favorite team), home theater equipment (althogh considering how expensive that stuff is, I doubt I can afford anything), and pretty much anything on the History Channel.

I'm looking to spend anywhere from $40 - $60.

History Channel had some awesome series about the tools and machines that shaped history.

If you check out their store, you'll probably find awesome VHS/DVDs of shows like Conquest, History of the Gun, Mail Call, etc.

As for actual, physical tools, check out a knife shop. They'll often have some nice knives in that price range. I'm not just talking about large bowies & such, but also small, artisan crafted blades, pocketknives and moneyclips with nice handles, inlay work etc.

Does he have a dremmel tool? I don't know how I survived without mine. If he does, then maybe consider getting him a new set of bits and possibly a little "drill press" style holder for it.

Or how well is his workshop organized? If he's got lots of tools laying around then you could get him some tool boxes or a pegboard for hanging up all that stuff.

As a wee bit of a sports fanatic, I'd be looking towards Brigham Young shwag. A quick search of the college on Ebay gives us:

A sweet jersey: http://cgi.ebay.com/BYU-BRIGHAM-YOU...728722080QQcategoryZ24551QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

A picture + autograph of Ty Detmer (Heisman winning B.Y.U. Quarterback), suitable for framing: http://cgi.ebay.com/BYU-Brigham-You...726635282QQcategoryZ23797QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

B.Y.U. Mini Helmet: http://cgi.ebay.com/BYU-Brigham-You...729125700QQcategoryZ24551QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Not sure how it would go over but you mentioned Astronomy. See how much it would cost have a star named after him. It could be something to show off where ever he goes.

Some very good suggestions so far, folks! Thanks!

I think my dad is pretty set up as far as knives go, and I don't think there are many knife shops near where I live, but thanks for the suggestion!

We have a cool store in Atlanta called Distant Replays that sells throwback jerseys, as well as current stuff. You can search the site for something you dad might like:

I'll check out this web site later on when I'm not so busy at work. Thanks!

Have you tried www.thinkgeek.com? They have a lot of cool stuff.

Heh, I actually thought "Maybe I'll check out thinkgeek.com to see what they have" shortly after I posted this thread. They definately have a lot of cool little gadgets my dad would probably like. I'll be giving that site an in-depth search later on. :)

I'm pretty sure that he already has a Dremmel tool, but I'll double check. If he dosen't have one already, I think that one would be perfect for him.

His workshop is pretty well organized, with all of his tools in toolboxes or hanging from pegboards. He may be somewhat of a slob normally, but he does take good care of his tools. :)

hat, scarf, and gloves. never can go wrong with a good set.

Not a bad idea. Utah winters can get pretty cold at times.

The TV-Be-Gone, a device that turns off all TVs when used. Fun for Best Buy stores and all sorts of ne'er-do-wells who like a good laugh. Dads everywhere dig it.

Interesting device. It would be very fun to take into a Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Circuit City, etc. :)

Oh, my dad has lots of BYU Merchandise, including hats, t-shirts, sweat shirts, etc. :)

He even has a football autographed by Ty Detmer; about 12-13 years ago, my dad and I actually met Mr. Detmer while pheasent hunting because his favorite hunting spot was a ranch owned by my dad's lifelong buddy.

I've thought about this as well, but I'd have to be careful because I've heard that some of those "Name a star after yourself" companies are pretty much scams.
