Help me sort out Greyhawk support

I also agree that from your post it sounds like Erik Mona's LGG is ideal for your purposes. It's a great book.

Some good links here, too! I had some of these already, but there's a few here I am happy to add to my collection. :)

Here is the Denis Tetreault Greyhawk city map online, in case that link isn't among those above.

I am about to start a new Greyhawk campaign in little over a week from now. I have the LGG and the 1980 Gazetter (maps are still in excellent shape). I've also been raiding the ESDs at SVGames. My current plan is to run a Slavers campaign set in the 590s by combining and revising material from the both the Scourge of the Slavelords compilation and the latter Slavers book by SKR & Pramas.

My only problem is getting some detailed information on the City of Greyhawk to my players. They have access to the LGG, but they want more info on the city itself. The Adventure Begins (which I also have) has some details, but it's rife with spoilers. The City of Greyhawk boxed set hasn't made it to ESD status. I understand that several of the early issues of the Living Greyhawk Journal contained articles on the various quarters of the city. Are the pre-Poly/Dungeon issues of the LGJ still available somewhere? Paizo's site only has back issues from after the whole magazine mix-n-match period.

Lol, I somehow don't think people were meant to have access to that :)

Actually, I think a few of the first ones are free now. I can't remember where I heard that but I'm positive there was something about the early RPGA ones being free now.

If you can't find a copy of the 1983 boxed set on E-bay, which is worth it for the maps alone, get the Living Greyhawk Gazetter. It's not bad at all. The map is ok but nothing like the boxed set version.

Try Kalamar

Hey Irda Ranger,

I'm a long-time Greyhawker (at least 18 years) but after seeing how the setting was being treated, I switched to Kalamar. The setting is extremely open and has a classic "Greyhawk" feel. You can run a campaign just from the setting book (which is still in print) and if you want more, Kenzer & Company is supporting the heck out of it.

At least give it a look, you wont be sorry.

XOOOXXOXO,

Rob

It's only $30? I thought it was like $70 U.S.? Is it purchasable online? $30 USD = $50 AUD... plus shipping... ooh, no die-hard GH fan should be without those Dragon articles... all the times I've looked through Zavoda's index and cursed the day I lost my metre high stack of Dragon mags... why did you make me a GH fan AFTER 2nd ed. God, why? You cruel, cruel woman...

DDK---I got it as a Christmas gift back in the day, but you can find the Dragon archive on various discount places online (including Amazon) for $30 US or even cheaper sometimes.

I have never seen it at the full MSRP.

I have to recommend the Living Greyhawk Gzeteer. [snip] And best of all is that it's 3E already.

Not quite 100%: the LGG wasn't written using the DMG NPC classes, unfortunately. That's one of my mini-projects, at some point: to update the rulers of the nations with NPC classes, prestige classes, etc.

It's worth noting that the D&D Gazeteer is essentially a much, much thinner version of the same product.

Though IMO the D&D Gaz. map is better than the LGG map :D

I would guess that the poster misses the smaller-sized hexes: you can't really do conversions between the editions of the GH maps very easily :(

The RPGA has been posting some articles from the now-OOP LGJ issues on the main LG RPGA web site at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/downloads
Per the posting at
http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=lg/welcome
they'll be posting articles from the first several LGJ issues online, although it doesn't sound like the entire magazines are being put up (though I'd be happy to be wrong about that).

Wow! Great responses, all of you! I really appreciate it. I guess the consensus is then is to get the LGG (unless I get Kalamar instead, right Bavix? :))

Thanks for the links! It will take some time to sort through it all, there’s a lot of stuff there. I’ll do my best.

That’s too bad about no NPC classes used in the LGG, but then that might make more sense if you presuppose that Kings get to be Kings be being adventurers first. That’s why we adventure, isn’t it? :)

I only found the Dragon Archive for $40 US. I know it’s a great price if you consider that its 16 cents an issue, but I just don’t think I can justify the money right now on top of the Gazetteer. Maybe later

Thanks again!

Irda Ranger
