Help Me, Teach Newly Recruited Girl Gamer Learn DnD

And Buttercup - to just hand her a PHB and have her do it all herself is SUCH a terrible idea, I can't believe you've ever introduced a non gamer, much less a girl, into playing.
Girls do have brains you know. It might be a little higher up on the body than most guys are used to looking, but it's there...

However other than that last phrase I'd be inclined to agree when handed a 'generic human' and told to make them into a gamer.

But then I like the story elements and not the crunchy parts.

What you introduce somebody to first is likely to be what forms their lasting impression of the game. So if you go heavy roleplay and low rules that's likely to be what they develop a taste for. But if you toss them into a dungeon crawl that might end up being what they go for.

If they stick around.
It's less which you go for than it is how you present it.

Show your enthusiasm for it; and how you feel it can be fun to get involved with. Show the person what you like about it. What you think they; knowing their personality, will like about it.

Most of all though, just do it. Just start roleplaying. Next time you meet the person just start asking them about their character. Tell them to come up with a fictional fantasy person on the spot, then present a few questions or present a situation for that person.

And if it's a girl and you're a guy (or vice versa) and you're getting the right looks; it might just help to 'look down her shirt', but if you're not getting those looks, then by all means avoid doing so. :D

Hey, what the...?

I have women in my games.

Actually, you're right now that I think of it, my behaviour does change.

I am on my best behaviour with them until we start to date:)

I also prefer the rules light approach. I've used it many times and it usually worked. Of course, YMMV. I also prefer the rules light approach.

...and, of course, don't look down her shirt.

What a coincidence that you live in Brest! :D

You can say "Make a melee attack roll. That's going to be one twenty-sided dice rolled, plus the number in the box that says "total melee attack bonus" in the corner. If the roll of the dice, plus that number, beats their armor, you hit and can roll damage."

I'd avoid things like "melee attack" and all that other stuff. What you wanna do is something like "There's a big, ugly monster standing five feet away from you. Do you want to hit him? Okay, roll that die there... and add this number from your sheet to it. The higher you roll, the better."

Do this a couple times, avoiding game jargon, until she gets the hang of it.
