This short campaign (I envision 5 to 8 gaming sessions) would be set into Lovecraft's Dreamland as described in a Chaosium BRP Cthulhu supplement. However, I intend to use either True20 or Savage Worlds for game mechanics. (Note that it could also work with d20 Modern-Past / Grim Tales.) I have a general idea of what I want to do, but it needs to be fleshed out, hence your suggestions are welcome.
Horror and exotic explorations Pulp game.
This is an Indiana Jones / horror adventure, set in an exotic country around 1936-38, with PCs being mostly American-English characters; typically professors, explorers, occultists, etc., with both guns and occult knowledge. They will fight Cthulhu mythos horrors and nazis.
Lost in the Dreamland.
Except for the campaign's conclusion, all of the adventure occurs in the Dreamland. However, the trick is that the PCs don't know about it! They first believe they are in middle-east or something, then get more and more clues that something is amiss. At some point they understand that they are in another world, and must find the mean to escape it. Then, when they realize that they are in the Dreamland, they also understand that their body in the real world is in jeopardy, and that they must find a way to escape or they will die.
Adventure Plot.
-- The adventure begins with the PCs and their equipment being on a ship in the middle of the Mediterranean sea. The ship is Italian, and almost nobody speaks English onboard. They also notice a suspicious man who seems to be German. Anyway, they embarked on this ship as discreetely requested by the British Government's secret services. Here they meet with an informant who tells them they are on a most secret mission, and had to meet here because there shouldn't be spies on this Italian ship. So the PCs must find a very important English scholar and scientist who disappeared in the middle-east (somewhere around Turquey, Iraq, Arabia, etc.). What the PCs don't know and won't realize at this point, is that they are already in the dreamland.
-- Later the PCs will come ashore, and the land will gradually become more and more exotic and unknown, until they realize this is certainly not the real Middle East. Only when they eventually meet with the scholar/scientist, will they have access to a map of the Dreamland, and understand they are not in the real world. How they came here is a mystery, and how they will go out and go back home has to be figured out.
-- Of course there is also nazis searching for the scholar/scientist, for the man has occult (Cthulhu mythos) knowledge that Hitler wants at all cost...
Adventure Events: I need your imput.
-- While the PCs' spirits wander the Dreamland, what happened to their bodies in the real world? And what about the scholar/scientist?
Myself, I thought that maybe the scholar/scientist had already been captured by the nazis, but died at their hands. Now his spirit wanders the Dreamland, and the nazis are aware of that. Then, they captured the PCs who had been sent in search of the scholar/scientist by the British governement. The PCs are kept asleep (by the nazis) with drugs and speak while sleeping, so the nazis hope to listen to them when they meet with the scholar/scientist and learn where he has hidden his occult books. In any case, while on the Dreamland the PCs should eventually become aware of their situation, and try to find a way of not speaking aloud while sleeping. Then, they must also find a way to influence some of the nazis when those sleep as well, and influence them (use of magic and dreaming ability should come in handy).
-- Otherwise, what other interesting events to add to this adventure?
