Help Me With My New Group

Update

Quarterstaff...we are going to shelve the idea of a "warstaff" until later. I am using the optional rules for Weapon Group Proficiencies from Unearthed Arcana, so the whole thing of is it a simple weapon or a martial weapon is kind of moot. I figure put it in either Weapon Group (maces and clubs) or Exotic Weapon (maces and clubs). But yes...if you were to use normal weapon proficiencies from the PHB I intended to make it a martial weapon or exotic, weights twice as much as a normal quarterstaff (I guess...still guessin on that) and it has a cost...around 10 GP or so. Treat it as a spear for purposes of what materials it can benefit from.

Now...question. What to have them do? The fighter is a knight. The rogue is his page, minstrel and social information gatherer. The cleric is his confessor and travels with him to be able to find converts and good things. They are heading to barony that is all forested valley and dominated by a huge lake. The wild elf druid is a native to that area and the dwarf sorcerer/fighter's clan is from the surrounding mountains and he travels the human lands to get a better understanding as to why he was born able to do arcane magic without training. They are all 3rd level. This valley is the furthest barony of the human kingdom that the three humans are from. It borders the High Elf Empire and a huge unsettled area given to the barbarians as thanks for their help fighting off the now defunct orc empire. Unhumans (orcs, goblins, gnols and the like) are back to living how they use to...squabbling tribes. They are no longer a threat of becoming a huge force to be reckoned with. So....ideas anyone? I was thinking just to get them going use that pre-made adventure found on the WOTC site called "dry spell". Someone is draining smaller, but still important lakes in the valley. That is my take. Anyone ele have a better idea?

Custom Summoning Lists

What do you all think of the optional rule for Summon Monster Variants (pg 136 -139 Unearthed Arcana)? I plan to use them personally. So far this is what my players have came up with.

Dwarven Sorcerer/Fighter: He is a dwarf sorcerer...okay odd. I figure I'd populate his "Summon Monster" lists with Earth based creatures. Perhaps celestial ones since he can nomally summon them being NG. For example...his Summon Monster I has two monsters. A badger with the "celestial template" and a dog with the "earth element" template. My question with this theme is with celestial. Earth...perfect fit. Celestial...maybe since he is N/G and pretty devout to his native deities. Is there perhaps another template that is a better choice?

Wild Elf Druid of Solonor Theldaria: All of his creatures are going to be wolves, black or brown bears, great cats or birds of prey. Those animals are associated with Solonor Theldaria. For a theme...use only those animals and toss on a template on a few to spice it up. The only templates I could think of is Wood Elemental, Celestial and/or Anarchic. Celestial and Anarchic maybe....his god is CG. Wood since he is a druid and the forest he is from is wickedly, ultra thick. Think real world Panama or the Amazon but with temperate climate. Wild Elves in my games live in the trees ala Ewok, so thats another argument in favor of "wood element" creatures. What do you think?

Lastly...the cleric. I don't have much of the backstory to the human deities in the game like what is already out for non-humans. Using what I know of the FR god Ilmatar since that god is closest to his, his favored animals and creatures are white doves, white donkeys, sparrows and field mice. Not really all that usefull for a Summon Monster spell....maybe the donkey. If you are talking about "monsters" associated with him thats devas, planetars and solars. Not exactly Summon Monster I or II material. I was thinking just plain ol "celestial" and "half celestial" creatures. Maybe axiomatic since he and the deity are lawful/good. Any other suggestions on what to do with that one?

Thank You ALL Again

What to do with them? Make them squeal, of course!

I'm in the middle of reading the last book of Harry Turtledove's "Darkness" books, in which HT basically has rewritten the story of WW2 as a fantasy series. Its a stunner of a series- and in it he does things you could only do with a historian's knowledge of WW2 (which he has).

And yes, its very different from the way in which war is depicted in most fantasy novels. For one thing, you get an inside look into the fantasy equivalent of the Manhattan Project, and see how new and terrible mageries are developed.

In other words:

Send the party to war. It gives a vast backdrop, plenty of drama and potential for both role players and roll players to enjoy themselves.

How to do it? They could be impressed into service. They could volunteer. They could be "Special Forces"- although I'd leave that option open for later. They could be mercenaries. They could be civilian "irregulars" aka guerillas.

Yet Another Elf Question

I have question on how in a "typical" AD&D world how various subraces of elf react to one another. In my world I have basically you core race "high elves", spear weilding "wild elves", ultra snobby and more magical "grey elves" and everyone's favorite to cheese with your "dark elf". I know in a typical AD&D world no one likes drow and the feeling is mutal but what about the others?

Also what about this. A high elf and a wild elf have a child...what subrace is it? Also if a half elf and a elf have a child is it always a half elf?

Firearms in AD&D

In my I have hinted at that there is firearms in my world but they are rare. They have only been around for something like 10 years. There are s, s and scatterguns. THe biggest are tripod mounted "swivel s". I was inspired by an article in a old Dragon Mag...the one that introduced my other favorite setting...Dragonstar. Anyhow I liked how firearms were presented in that issue and talked about it but shelved the idea since no one is from the part of the kingdom that firearms are common.

My question is this...has anyone delt with powder items in their campaigns and can they relate their experiance with it? Was it good? Bad? Anything that needs to be monitoredand so on?
