Okay.....I am a bit ignorant on what artists charge for thier works and I need your help.

I recently have been getting some interest in my works and I don't want to under or overcharge for my pieces...does anyone have any suggestions or experience in this area?

Please visit my gallery so as to best match the quality of my work to the asking fee.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated...I am completely lost in this. :-(

I've been commissioning character portraits lately, and I think that your pictures would be worth around $50.

But before I would commission a piece from you, I would want to have more confidence that you could do faces. Too many of the faces there are of monsters, or distorted by strong emotion.

And while I really like the dynamic scenes and the use of depth and perspective, I find some of the humanoid characters to be rather chunky- their limbs seem a little too short and thick. They look like dwarves.

I also would hesitate asking you for a color piece. Partly that is because the monochromatic pieces are so well done, and partly because the color pieces don't show quite the same level of mastery.

If your use of color and layering is as good as your shading, and if you can draw a wide variety of expressive faces- we're looking at your work being worth $100, which I think is pretty much the going rate for experienced professional work.

Until you get established and have a wider portfolio and history of successful customers you might need to discount a little. But $40 for B&W, $75 for color would be a very reasonable amount to charge even then.

Just my 2 cp

p.s.

I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is, in case you are looking to do a commissioned piece. My e-mail is in my profile.

Thank you for your recommendations!

Hmm...you're right...I certainly haven't displayed many normal faces in my gallery...as for color....I don't blame you...I'm still way to new at it......$40 to $75, respectably, sounds good though.

I may take you up on your offer as soon as I return from my military induced three month sabatical. When I return I plan to actually start painting as well...instead of digitally coloring. And for what it's worth...I attached and actual portrait that I did of a friend of mine (I dont have any genre related (and normal) portraits yet)...it's not fantasy...but maybe it'll give you a more comfy feeling.

Some of the attention is coming as a surprise...I actually (and still) figured myself to be about 5 years out from entereing anything professional...was only posting to get critiques and advice on whats needed but I started getting offers and requests.

Anyone else have suggestions?

Perhaps for a commissioned character portrait $50.00 is about right.

The rates we are paying for professional art varies. In some projects the artist is a partner, but generally we pay by the quarter, half, and full page. These rates vary by experience and quality. If I had never worked with you before we would start at $20 for quarter page, $40 for half page and $60 for whole page.

The nice thing about working for a small publisher is you usually have a ton of work, and we pay on delivery for non-exclusive rights.

If you are interested drop me a line pogueclan(at)yahoo.com.

Your work is especially appealing because of the backgrounds and finished look. Keep working on your proportions - but I love your monsters.

Rates also depend on what the art is for too. If its for someone's personal use (a portrait for his character in a game), that rate is usually not as high as what a publisher should be paying you for art that they'll put in a book.

I've seen different rates for illustrations for books differ greatly. Really depends on the company. Small publishers or big publishers who like to go cheap may only pay like $20.00 for a quarter page illustration. A bigger publisher may pay $75.00 for a quarter page. Although, if they're going to be paying more, they expect the quality of art to match.

Of course there are a lot of professionals who charge the same rate regardless on whether its for personal use or for publishing. To them, you're paying for the time it takes to do the art piece. If the artist is going to be the same amount of time/effort into your portrait as he does for published books/mags.....then he'll most likely charge the same.

Then there's the artists who are charitable and strong fans too. They know the average gamer can't pay those prices and so may bring down the price for the fans. Artists like that don't mind doing that sometimes because they enjoy doing stuff for fans and the reward of that relationship is worth taking a hit on the pay. But book and magazine publishers should pay the full rate.

apalmer, you art pieces have full tonal values. That's a lot of work in itself. I think for you, black and white line art only should be around $20.00 for a small scene. And like Cheiromancer said, like maybe around $40.00 or $50.00 for a illustration with full shading/tonal values. Numbers based on the size of work usually seen at your gallery. Of course the price would go up if you'd be illustrating either a cover or a bigger spread. Full page or Double page or whatever.

Anyways, maybe spend some time to plop in some more nomal humans in your gallery. Ones that aren't doing a battle cry or something. That way, people that check out your gallery know your range for sure. The portrait you put up doesn't really tell me much. Except that I still like your rendering style. I'd like to see some faces of normal humans/demi-humans (elves, half-elves, humans) that are drawn from no reference or source material.

BTW, I think you're well on your way to doing really good pro quality stuff. You're ahead of the game already. You're not afraid to do backgrounds. I mean, look at Boris Vallejo, he is still terrible at backgrounds. Keep up the good work, don't get cocky, always strive to get better....even though your good already....and I know I'll be picking up a Dragon Mag cover with your illustration on it someday.:D

I want to thank all of you that made recommendations. I have decided on the following:

B/W Line Art: $20

B/W Character Sketch (Detailed): $40
Colorized: $60

B/W with Background: $70
Colorized: $100

Epic Pictures: Must be discussed

I recognize my skills in coloring leave alot to be desired and are basic in level. They are included only for those who may have interest. I definitely intend to improve those skills so keep your eyes and ears open. The character sketches will be detailed to a level not unlike my Drow elf picture below....added background work can be referenced at my gallery here:

http://www.enworld.org/modules.php?...=view_album.php

I will post...shall we say...less animated or angry pictures in the near future to provide a well rounded portfolio.

These prices will of course be subject to change based on demand and on the merit of my skill.
