Help! need Windows XP IRC Client w/o install

I'm looking for an IRC client that doesn't need any sort of install, if that is possible. I'm trying to find one that will work here at work. I don't have admin priveledges on this machine to install programs. That also means I can't install Java. Any ideas?

Download PuTTY and SSH into a server that has irssi/BitchX.

There are plenty of web-based IRC clients that don't use java. The problem is finding one that you can use. Start with google.

You could also try chatzilla. It's installed with mozilla, or if you have firefox you might be able to install it as an extension.

Thanks. I figured out that I could install onto a different drive, so I just went with mIRC.

My sysadmin busted my mIRC and gave me a warning, so I'm again looking for a solution that doesn't require installing anything.

XCorvis: Can't install mozilla. All I've found is CGI: IRC on google, and that came close (using someone's webpage login) but I couldn't get to the right channel.

Any other ideas or further explanations?

If you can't install an IRC client and Java won't work you're pretty much stuck with a CGI script of some sort. I know that's how friends have gotten around blocks at work in the past.

You'll need to get a "shell account." This is used to run your remote program (namely, irssi/BitchX). There are various providers of free shell accounts. You'll have to get one of these and confirm they have either irssi/BitchX. Then, search and find PuTTY. After that you're going to connect to your shell account much the same way you connect to IRC. After that, you use irssi/BitchX to connect to your IRC server.

Naughty naughty. How did he bust you? Did he happen to see it when he walked by, or did he just show up and tell you to stop? The reason is, a sysadmin can tell (if they're paying attention) if someone is using IRC on their network. This is true of most all regualr installed apps and most web clients. The web clients are really just simple IRC programs that run in your browser. They actually open an IRC connection from your computer, which the admin can see with network utilities. Really, he should just block the port in the firewall if he wants to stop that kind of thing.

Anyway, the only feasable way for you to IRC now is to get a shell account on a linux/unix server somewhere and connect to it using SSH. Over the SSH connection, you can run BitchX or EPIC IRC (or whatever). To the admin, it will look like an SSH connection, even if you're IRCing with it, because your IRC session comes from the computer you're logged into. Check with your ISP - they may offer shell accounts. You'll need to learn a little bit about unix, but it won't be too bad.

Note that, depending on his paranoia level, he may bust you for using SSH if you don't have a work related reason for it. You might be S.O.L. here.
