thank you one and all for the help in this matter. i figured i should give you an update and tell you whats been happening: nothing.

sorry, my own private little joke. we only play D&D in Forgotten Realms every other week. the other week it's GURPS in a Forgotten Realms setting (yeah kinda confusing, but in GURPS we're near/in Waterdeep). and the last time we played D&D we were still in the forrest north of Myth Dranor, so i really couldn't do anything then. we had just cleared the forrest and defeated a baddie sent against us by the Cult of the Dragon. so presumably the next time we play (a week from monday, this monday is our DM's fiance's {or girlfriend depending on which one you ask}birthday, so he won't be joining us) i'll be able to do SOMETHING. so here's the plan ( i do have a couple of questions):
1. we're going to be headed back to our semi-permanant base in Zhentil Keep (if you'd like to hear that story, let me know and i'll add it to this post). so i should be able to find someone who can research making a permanant protection from evil zone somewhere in my forge building.
2. should i build the lead lined room in the basement, and have it put there?
3. even if shadis doesn't always follow the rules, if you come up with a way to do something thats within the rules (or just bends them slightly) that doesn't fit in with his plan, he'll usually let you get away with it. i think he abandons the rules like he does because we seem to side step even his best laid plans (which i think is the hallmark of a good gaming group). he likes to mess with us when we make a glaring error, but he can't step too far or jennifer will step on him when we play GURPS (kinda like the checks and balances of the executive and legislative branches of our govenment... only our gaming system actually works).
4. do you think that the protection from evil spell will still allow me to crush the sword and steal its XPs?
5. so if all goes according to my plan, i'll get the PfE made permanant in the leadlined room in my forge and crush the sword and absorb its XPs after 24 hours. does that sound feasable?
6. irdeggman, what exactly is (oh never mind i just got the abbreviations RAW "rules as written" and TPK "total party kill".... see i'm not totally slow)... i also would like to say thank you, your insights have been helpful to the formation of my pathetic yet boldly stupid plan (just kidding, your advice has been rock solid.).
so anyway. i have a little over a week before i try to impliment (did i spell that right?) my plan. if anyone else has any other ideas or can see a major hole that i'm missing... PLEASE let me know. thank you one and all again for all of your help!
