The Protection from Evil spell:

Second, the barrier blocks any attempt to possess the warded creature (by a magic jar attack, for example) or to exercise mental control over the creature (including enchantment (charm) effects and enchantment (compulsion) effects that grant the caster ongoing control over the subject, such as dominate person).

It should do what you want. However, the duration is only a minute per level.

Are you in a hurry?
If not pay to have PfE researched to be cast with the Permanecy spell.
This way you can still use it without those nasty side effects.
You are also protected in the future.

the sword did not impart any type of negative level... i know this because there were MANY instances in which i would have been unconsious or dead if i had fewer hit points than what was on my sheet. that being said... i don't think my DM actually thought about imposing the negative levels. or it may have been that he was just having way to much fun seeing me (and the other players) squirm as i played an evil character... as for the item being a plot hook or other thing... no way. i know shadis to well, and it was put there only as an after thought (i think he created the stats for the sword after i picked it up).

the thing that worries me most about it is that if its onlyt supposed to be able to communicate via telepathically with its possesor, how did it connect with the WF? he never touched it, and usually only got within about 10 to 15 feet of it... that is what scares me...

I would hazard a guess that your DM is using the telepathy as an equivalent to speech and "assuming" it works like it did in 2nd ed.

Regardless the sword should have no influence over your PC - when the other party members broke the curse it shuld have been sufficient to remove any "influence" the item had on your PC.

And it looks like you should be scared since by what you are reporting the item follows none of the rules.

Again, regardless of this lapse in following the RAW have faith in your DM. He introduced the item he must come up with a way to incorporate it into the story - most likely with some side story on how it came about and how to get rid of it. If it is his intent to end up with a TPK then it will happen and most likely the players will rebel and be real pissed off. End of game.

thank you one and all for the help in this matter. i figured i should give you an update and tell you whats been happening: nothing. :) sorry, my own private little joke. we only play D&D in Forgotten Realms every other week. the other week it's GURPS in a Forgotten Realms setting (yeah kinda confusing, but in GURPS we're near/in Waterdeep). and the last time we played D&D we were still in the forrest north of Myth Dranor, so i really couldn't do anything then. we had just cleared the forrest and defeated a baddie sent against us by the Cult of the Dragon. so presumably the next time we play (a week from monday, this monday is our DM's fiance's {or girlfriend depending on which one you ask}birthday, so he won't be joining us) i'll be able to do SOMETHING. so here's the plan ( i do have a couple of questions):

1. we're going to be headed back to our semi-permanant base in Zhentil Keep (if you'd like to hear that story, let me know and i'll add it to this post). so i should be able to find someone who can research making a permanant protection from evil zone somewhere in my forge building.

2. should i build the lead lined room in the basement, and have it put there?

3. even if shadis doesn't always follow the rules, if you come up with a way to do something thats within the rules (or just bends them slightly) that doesn't fit in with his plan, he'll usually let you get away with it. i think he abandons the rules like he does because we seem to side step even his best laid plans (which i think is the hallmark of a good gaming group). he likes to mess with us when we make a glaring error, but he can't step too far or jennifer will step on him when we play GURPS (kinda like the checks and balances of the executive and legislative branches of our govenment... only our gaming system actually works).

4. do you think that the protection from evil spell will still allow me to crush the sword and steal its XPs?

5. so if all goes according to my plan, i'll get the PfE made permanant in the leadlined room in my forge and crush the sword and absorb its XPs after 24 hours. does that sound feasable?

6. irdeggman, what exactly is (oh never mind i just got the abbreviations RAW "rules as written" and TPK "total party kill".... see i'm not totally slow)... i also would like to say thank you, your insights have been helpful to the formation of my pathetic yet boldly stupid plan (just kidding, your advice has been rock solid.).

so anyway. i have a little over a week before i try to impliment (did i spell that right?) my plan. if anyone else has any other ideas or can see a major hole that i'm missing... PLEASE let me know. thank you one and all again for all of your help!

If it were me...and i'm still NE, I'm offer it as a sacrifice to Orcus. :p ;) But then that's just me.

*likes sacrificing evil magical things to Orcus so he can go around killing gods. :D*

Drop the research for making PfE permanent. Just get a Hallow/Unhallow cast for your forge room. It's a lower level spell and it's already in the rules.

It sounds like your DM is creative and that can be a good thing. I would worry about things like accidentally freeing a bound demon/elemental/something similar. You might look at finding additional protections in case you are fighting a released creature when you destroy the item. Be prudent and prepared. :)

Oh, it's implement - since you asked.

It pays to be literate... (it also pays to re-read your own posts)

as i was looking back at what was posted, i realize a question i asked never got answered:

what is a shield guardian?

its not listed in the DMG or the PHB. is it a monster or NPC for hire? what do they do? i can get access to most 3.0-3.5 books, i just need to know where to look.

thanks for the hallow idea BardStephenFox, and the spell check.;)

It's a construct that used to defend arcane spellcasters (wizards, bards and sorcerers, not warlocks, warmages or even wu jens) from harm.

A Quick Update...just to see if anyones paying attention ;-)

Our DM was gone for a couple of weeks, so things have been mostly in the GURPS campaign... and last weeks D&D night was basically getting a new player into our campaign... the previous D&D night did have a few details concerning my quest to destroy the sword...

The lead lined room and the basement are both complete. However, a couple of problems have come up, delaying the destruction of the sword... We are now on the run... its an artifact race between us and the Cult of the Dragon.... we are attempting to recover the pieces of an artifact... we have three and the Cult of the Dragon has two... we now know where the three other pieces are and are now on the run from an assassin group as well as the Cult of the Dragon... we lost two cohorts and the top three floors of an inn to a few delayed blast fireballs... (yeah, i only took 94 points of damage from that... good thing i'm already scarred beyond belief...)

so thats where we're at and i'll let you know what happens when the sword makes another appearance...
