Help us plan an Atlanta gameday

I didn't want to be the point man. I have no idea where to start in setting one up. We can discuss it in general. If we get an idea of how many people might show up then we can start looking closer at a place to gather. We might be able to do it in someone's home if it's only a few people.

Why don't you call WW and I'll call the Gaming Pit and try to settle on a place and time of day? After that we can discuss (here and on CM) about dates of availability. Let's try to get both Saturday and Sunday time availabilities.

A house might be good enough if few people can come. The Gaming Pit is a long drive of the perimeter. Are there any other locations? White Wolf is close and would even be better if we could hold it there, but I doubt they have open gaming. ;)

Once a date, time and location (I'm guessing 10-5 or 10-8?) are settled on, I'll start a thread here and announcement threads linked to it on many other sites. Planning for attendance and running games will be the first thread. Then a general sign-up on a 2nd thread (like Buzz does for Chicago gameday - check his thread out).

Prizes for GMs as incentives to run would be nice. I'm not sure where to petition for publisher aid though.

I've been wondering if Atlanta would host any of these. This is something I would be interested in running a game for. I couldn't do more than that b/c I just moved to the area less than 8 months ago and am still learning the area. There has to be someone around that either goes to Emory, GA State or Tech or knows a someone who does. I mean, not me, but someone. A campus site might be the best. Heck, how about any of the smaller colleges around here, like GA Perimiter or Gwinnett College.

Having worked at Emory for 5 years I can say the university doesn't allow sanctioned events without a lot of hoop jumping. Of course, it doesn't have to be a sanctioned event, but attempting to coordinate parking (hourly charged), finding the location on campus (we'd be stuck with what we could get, have lost priority, and might be bumped), and locating someone from Emory (I'm no longer there) to authorize the event would be a major hassle.

Georgia Tech held something similar in on campus. I stopped in one for a 1/2 hour or so about 6 years ago. I believe they stopped though a few years back.

Georgia State is probably our best bet, but again, we need someone on campus to legitimize it. Otherwise, we are just asking to use their facilities for free.

If the weather were nice, I'd suggest something outside.

I am in Birmingham, but might come to such an event depending on the logistics. I would suggest that anyone doing this consider how DragonCon effects the plans. You probablly dont want it too close to the event. Also consider secondary concerns like food (OK not so secondary) in the area, its cost, and availability. Parking has already been mentioned.

A stray, and possibly useless thought, what about a Ransom model? Ransom a game day. find a reasonable priced venue and then say "When we get X dollars we will have it there. Overage will go toward snacks (if sufficent) or toward next years game day. If insufficent funds are recieved by Cut Off Date all money will be refunded." That way people who wanted to foot the bill can and those who cant, but would want to particiapte, could and a better location might be had. Free is likely still best, but its something to consider.
