Help Wanted with Dungeons & Dastards. How to get back that lovin' feelin'?

So, another thread here and email discussions with my gaming group made me realize that my friends prefer a D&D play style that is very tactical & strategic (cowardly) whereas I prefer something more powergame & story oriented (heroic). The Hackmaster Basic (HMB) game that is on offer next looks to be the next installment of Dungeons & Dastards for me. Historically, I have played a hero anyway, which eventually leads to the hero's demise and me leaving the game until something else comes up. I'd like to do it differently this time since this is a group of friends and I really want to give HMB a fair try as a long-time reader of Knights of the Dinner Table (back to issue 1). Any advice on how to get back that lovin' feelin' is appreciated.

Note that some references are for humor, but I seriously am trying to work out this problem for myself. Also note that trying to get the others to play differently will probably be like asking the sun not to shine in the day time. Similarly, me not playing is a less desirable option.

Thanks in advance as I will be AFK for a while.

So I think you are asking how to approach a situation a new game where you and the other players have different opinions about what you want. Please clarify if I've missed the point of this thread.

I've gone through something similar over the last couple of years. We've moved on from games / styles some of us didn't like to new games that we are all now pretty happy with without losing anyone or too much pain.

You tend to see a range of responses to this type of question from quit and find a new group to just suck it up and play what they want. Based on your circumstances any of this could be good advice. From my experience it depends on how open the other players are to the game / style you want to try and how good you are at convincing them to accept the challenge.

You say it is a low likelihood they will try something different, but why is that? Because they are happy and can't see that anything else would be fun?

I think it's just different play styles. But, it seems to be at its worst in any game of the D&D ilk. Other games tend to be more heroic. I will likely give it a try and take a break (again) if it doesn't suit me. Perhaps it will surprise me.
