The warlord's basic-attack-granting utility really depends on the rest of the party's composition. I know in our Dark Sun campaign, our damage output goes up significantly when both the arena fighter and the eldritch strike-using warlock are there.
But the non-executioner assassin and the monk really can't hit with basic attacks.
