D&D 3E/3.5 Help with building a melee character! 3.5

Hey Everyone,

My wife would like to build a melee master. Specifically, she was thinking of playing a Thri Keen. We are using Gesault rules, and all of the Complete series books, CBoEM, all FR supplements (that have 3.5 updates), and XPH.

She isn't opposed to playing a caster, but would prefer a character that focused on melee combat, and used spells/powers as a complementary/backup to her main function.

Thanks for any advise!

You couldn't go wrong with a monk/cleric. Wisdom works for both classes and the flurry of blows on that mother would be awesome to see.

Depending on the books available, I'd consider a gestalt Figher with Psion or Psionic warrior.

Fighters really are the best at combat... just from the volume of feats. Other classes make up for it in other ways, but IMO single class fighters are the most deadly general combatants.

I think psionics are very fitting for the Kreen... as well as a powerful choice.

Psion would have access to more powerful enhancements and many more powerpoints - including some designed with a 1/2 BAB progression in mind. But Psionic warrior would make for a tremendous number of feats and could allow the series of 'claw' enhancing spells - which will be impressive with the Thiri Kreens 4 natural weapons.

You can also wear any armour without interfering with your casting, although I'm not sure Kreen can even wear armour?

I agree that Cleric/Monk could be an interesting one - some of the clerical buffs would make such a character very unpleasant. Although the lack of armour might hurt and they're going to be somewhat reliant on buffing themselves before a fight.

If you want to steer clear of magic. Then a Fighter/Rogue will have amazing synergy. Good fort/reflex, sneak attack (with 4 arms!), loads of skills, top BAB and loads of feats. Can't be anything other than nasty. Switching Fighter for Paladin, Barbarian or Ranger could also work rather well, depending on where you see the character going.

Whichever way you go, I'd definitely focus on making use of the number of limbs...

Another nice idea if you want a little bit charisma and extra goodness for all those attacks: Play a paladin/bard. Singing helps all your attacks, Divine Might adds to the damage (and Divine Favor if you have prep time)... you can heal and you can use the utility arcane spells while enjoying skillpoints and all the other fun.

Edit: A paladin/wilder is similar, has less spells and skillpoints, but more offensive spellcasting OMPHF.
