And, yes, there have been many occassions where I've used most of the mat for combats or other situations.
According to their website, the largest mat Chessex makes is 34 1/2" x 48" and costs $29.98. That is almost the same area as a Tact-Tiles 12 tile set (30" x 40").
Typically a single combat won't need 240' (48 x 5'). Even if you do, you almost always won't ALSO need 170' (34 x 5') from side to side in a single combat battlefield.
But the beauty of Tact-Tiles is that even if you do, the tiles are modular and can accommodate a larger length by sacrificing some width. If you wanted you could make a battlefield 600' (12 x 10 x 5') long by 50' (10 x 5') wide with the 12 tile set. If the battle goes is a little wider than 50', then sacrifice some length for width or make an "I" shape. Or if you have any irregularly shaped encounter, just shape the tiles as needed.
Another feature you need to keep in mind is the ability to pre-draw and reveal one tile at a time. This really speeds up game play. Just remember to keep the foam spacers they include with each set, they help keep the tiles from sliding during transport so that most of the drawing remains in tact.

P.S. If you are going to draw, dry-erase rules. No more stained hands/arms. And when you slip up with wet erase, it's a real pain to erase just a small area. With dry-erase you can fine tune erase with the swipe of a finger tip.
