Help with Two-Bladed Sword Fighter

Shirt Guy John

First Post
For my next character, I want to create a fighter who specializes in the use of a Two-Bladed sword. I'm not sure what level the characters are giong to be starting at yet, and it could be anywhere from first to fifth (hoping for fifth). The thing is, how exactly do I go about creating such a character? I'm not worried about him slaughtering everything he comes in contact with by himself, but I still want him to be effective, and looking over the rules, it looks like that might be difficult.

Using 32 point buy, I'm thinking starting stats like: Str 14, Dex 16, Con 12, Int 14, Wis 12, Cha 10. Strength is obvious (though it's lower than I ussually have with a fighter type, other than Ranger), the Dex is needed for Ambidexterity(One of my first level feats), Con is good but not great, Int is for the Expertise feat (I assume I'm giong to need some defense option in combat, plus I'd like to take the more tactical combat feats (Improved Trip, Improved Disarm), and then Wis and Cha are my two dump stats, with a nice little Wis bonus to help out will saves (I also didn't want a penalty to charisma... that just gets old).

For feats I'm looking at Ambidexterity, Two-Weapon fighting, and Weapon Proficiency(Two-Bladed Sword). I plan on taking Weapon Focus, Expertise, and Weapon Specialization by fifth level.

I'm looking at 5 skill points per level, so I have room for some cross-class skills, though I really don't know what these will be (any suggestions?). I'm gonna try to pitch Intimidate as a class skill for fighters, though that might not happen.

The character is a young swordsman, self-trained, who wishes to prove himself in the world, and is eager to develop the seemingly untapped style of double-weapon fighting.

Any input/help/sugestioon is appreciated.

As side note, I was wondering if, when wielding a double weapon, one could choose to wield it as a two-handed (y'know, str-and-a-half to damage) weapon if fighting with only one head. Could one use Monkey Grip (from Sword and Fist) to wield a double weapon in one hand, treating it as a normal weapon and allowing use of the off-hand?

Yes.

Yes. But bear in mind that using a double weapon one-handed, you can only use one head for attacking.

There unfortunately aren't any PrCs specifically for characters using double weapons (unless you happen to be an orc or half-orc). The Weapon Master from S&F is about the closest thing you'll see, and that is quite feat intensive.

Regarding feats, improved critical is nice. Aside from that, I'm hoping 3.5 will have more higher level fighter feats.

PrC

Actually, one of the goals of the character is to develop a more focused double-weapon style, and perhaps teaching this style to others. For me, if possible, this means that later on I'll try and work with my DM to create a specific PrC focusing on the style that I create.

As for the using the double weapon with two hands, that's what I guessed. it wouldn't be too effective, but I'm just looking for options.

Any alternate builds that come to mind with this cahracter concept? Would another class/race offer more oportunities (like Psychic Warrior)?

If you are going to make a fighter that uses a double weapon( sword, axe) There are some feats in Mongoose's Ultimate Feats book. Take a look at Double Weapon Fighting. it gives you ambidexterity and two weapon fighting for free but only when using a double weapon. There are two feats that expand on this idea. 1. Power Double weapon that allows you to add you full strength bonus to damage for your off hand. 2. Improved Power Double weapon which alows you to add 1 and a half your strength bonus to damage with both ends of the double weapon.
Hope this helps.

I'd dump Int, boost Con. As a melee fighter, you need all the hit points you can get, while Expertise isn't great at low levels. You can always boost Int to 13 at 4th level and get Expertise later.

Sure, but he could also boost Constitution later. Increasing Con later gives you the hit points; increasing Int doesn't give you the skill points.

Anyway, you'll want Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, Greater Two-Weapon Fighting, and Perfect Two-Weapon Fighting too. I don't have my books at me, but I think you can take Two-Weapon Rend as well... Not sure, though.
I'd recommend the Power Attack chain over the Dodge chain.. While you already plan to take the Expertise feats (thus, priming you for Whirlwind Attack), you'll reach a whopping 8 attacks per round with Perfect Two-Weapon Fighting... I'd opt for Great Cleave instead...

Some other ideas: Go Ftr/Rog (start with Rogue ;)). For a melee fighter rogue, you'll need all hitpoints you can get, so priority no 1 will be to boost Con later. About 3 levels of rogue (5 are advised, but it's the question of 1 point BAB or one extra dice sneak attack) will let you use tumble and sneak attack to increase the effectiveness of your doubleweapon extra attacks as well as the twohanded attack with 1.5 times Strength modifier after tumbling into flanking position. Or go more into the rogue direction, raise a lot of knowledge skills and stick to fighter lvl4. You'll love the military knowledge skills there.

Get the Kalamars Player Guide. Lower Dex by 1 point and raise Wisdom to 13.

Get the following feats as soon as possible:
Ambi, TWF, EWP, Patience, Expert Timing, Know your enemy, Expertise, Improved Disarm (better with your low strength), Improved Critical.
Combat Reflexes and Expert Tactician only if you have too many feats ;)

Lvl1 Rog/Ftr: Ambidexterity, TWF, EWP (double sword)
Lvl2: -
Lvl3 Rog1/Ftr2: Weapon Focus (double sword), Patience
Lvl4 Rog1/Ftr3: -
Lvl5 Rog1/Ftr4: Weapon Spec.
Lvl6: ...

Wow. And here am I thinking that the quintessentials are powergamer-BS. That stuff is even more outrageous.

Those feats just cannot be balanced

While I like the idea of adding full str on the off-hand attack, I don't know if granting ambi/two-weapon with one feat would be balanced... anyone got any input on this? At first glance it seems a bit too much, but then again double weapons are a very very VERY restricted group, which I don't think is on par with two-weapon fighting in general (though that's just opinion, not fact).

The Improved double weapon power attack can not in any way be balanced, though. 1+1/2 str on BOTH attacks? no fricken way. I think the Double Weapon power Attack feat would be better suited for a PrC anyways (adding full str on off-hand attack with double weapon).

I think I'll keep the Int... just to diferentiate this character from the other fighters I've played (hey, in my freshman year of DnD I played two heavy hitters, and a Ogre fighter in a one shot... guess who always had the dumbest/least wise/most abrasive character?)

I'm not yet sure where I want to take this character, though. I'm thinking that he's going to be one for one-on-one duel-esque fighting (he's a show off), so dodge might be appropriate.

Any other tips?

If/when I get about to forming my own school of fighting, I'll be sure to set the PrC up on the boards.
