D&D Movie/TV Here Come The D&D Movie Gaming Tie-Ins!

While there has been no mention of any official sourcebook or adve nture which ties in to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves, with less than two months to go some news of licensed products have started to emerge. Of course, there will always be Funkopops and dolls and other merchandise, but Ultra PRO has announced some gaming accessories based on the movie.

The trailer has some sort of maze in a arena battle. If i was marketing I would translate that to a board game that teaches 5e combat mechanics, with some simple monster AI, and a PVP element.

A gateway product that still has value to experienced gamers who want to try different charachter builds in the PVP or just score some sweet minis.

I have a strong suspicion that this is tied up in the licensing agreements between Paramount and Hasbro and how much of a cut Paramount gets on explicit movie tie-in products.

Having to share a percentage on Starter Sets branded with the actors' faces might be less attractive than just assuming that folks in Target's game aisle will see the name "Dungeons and Dragons" and associate it with the movie without needing the explicit movie branding on it.

I wouldnt drop 50 bucks on a dice tower, but I hope its at least of quality material. Every time some folks show up with plastic ones I want to grab them and smash them against the wall they are so annoying. The tray looks nice and I am a big fan of those.

Still don't plan on seeing the movie, but, I had an epiphany when getting my D&D Trivial Pursuit game ready to sell along with my 5E books...

Every monster on the cover, used as tokens, will be in the new D&D movie.

We've already seen the Mimic, Gelatinous Cube, and Owlbear.

Those of you who go see it, I am sure, will also see a Mind Flayer, Beholder, and Demilich...

They really do want to make that & branding happen, don't they? I noticed that with the 1.2 OGL stuff too - the new badges they were putting out there had the dragon & on them prominently, rather than saying D&D or Dungeons & Dragons.

I guess it works - it did get me to discover the D&D Yahtzee/Dice Tower set they were selling at Half Price Books the other day because I saw a big red & from a distance and thought "that has to be some kind of D&D thing".

Yeah, I went to see the first D&D film with friends back in college. . .22 years ago.

I remember leaving it thinking "what the heck was that?" It was a really mediocre, pretty low-budget fantasy film with the D&D name slapped on. . .promptly followed by two direct-to-video sequels that were even lower budget. . .with less-sucky writing but still were cheap B-movies at best.

I really am not seeing anything that makes me think this will be anything other than a fairly generic fantasy film with relatively low production values and bad writing. I mean, if it turns out to be a really good film, I'll be happy. . .but I've got very low expectations.

I don't know if this means anything, but I looked up the budget for the original 2000 film ($36 million) and plugged it into the inflation calculator. The 2023 movie has a budget of $45 million, for reference.
