Heroes #21:Into Asylum/Season 3/2009

What's with Sylar saying "that's not how you hunt a shapeshifter" when there has never been a shapeshifter he's hunted before, and he didn't know the full abilities of how the shapeshifter's power worked.

I guess he just lies awake imagining what kewl powers might be out there and what he'd have to do to catch them all, but still.

I suppose there was the illusion woman from the second season, but she could change the whole room around. And she never got hunted by Sylar, he just killed her at close range.

I think he was making a correlation between an actual shapeshifter and a metaphic shapeshifter, like himself, revealing to the audience a bit more about Syler and how well he knows himself, perhaps also tipping off Danko or even laying out some bait to Danko by appearing to be self-revealing. Some excellent character layers were peeled back in this seemingly innocuous episode, IMO.

At what point did Sylar get invisibility/super speed/teleportation or whatever to disapear from the backseat of Danko's car and reappear on a rooftop?

Yes, this. At one point my girlfriend incredulously said "there's still more left," stunned that we were only at the 45 minute mark of what already seemed like 75 minutes of dullness.

I hit that point at around the 30 minute mark. I couldn't believe it when I saw the time. I will say that I think it picked up a bit in the second half. Still, overall I'm going to have to give this episode a rating of "meh".

Angela and Peter's scenes were good, if only because the actors can (mostly) pull off the awful dialogue. Maybe I was just thrilled to see the question of how faith fits into the whole powers thing. However, HRG giving them a pass again was old.

Nathan and Claire were... weird. Hayden looked cute with the new cut, but that's really the only thing that stuck in my mind. Otherwise, I just didn't buy into that whole situation. I was at least hoping to see the return of Meredith since they were in Mexico. I'm guessing she's actually dead at this point.

No follow through or even mention of Rebel... blah.

Sylar and Danko... snooze. I have to tackle them one at a time.

Again, I don't care about Danko... hell, the only reason I know his name is from posting on these threads. I don't buy that he's so utterly incapable of hunting down the heroes. I don't buy that they need a "win" - look at all the heroes they've caught so far. I just don't buy into the character at all. My hope is that Sylar, with his newfound ability, kills him and takes over. If this guy was supposed to be the big villain, it's a total failure. I'd have liked this story better if the government group was simply left faceless.

Sylar I get being canny, and can buy into him knowing how to hunt people, because that's his ability - intuitive aptitude. I'll even accept Sylar picking up a couple of abilities we don't know about - he was like that in the first season as well. I have a great deal of trepidation about him having the shapeshifting power though. It's a very easy crutch to use to write sloppily, and who could actually trust the Heroes writers to use it well at this point?

In the end, as I finish this up, what I think bothered me the most about this episode besides some of the awful dialogue was the awful writing. Characters weren't terribly consistent without a lot of hand-waving, locations didn't make a whole lot of sense outside of the novelty of new sets, and what little plot there was seemed forced. I'm really hoping next week will be better.

I was wondering about that too.
I have two theories, because i asked my wife the same thing and she responded.

"The Car was stopped the whole time, it seemed like he projected himself there, similiar to what we have seen Matt do. "

My theory is that we have seen sylar have some unkonwn shadow power since season 1, perhaps this is it.

Well, we learned a couple of things, and Claire isn't whining about her fate. Apparently Claire can filter out the effects of alcohol, and she seemingly knew this before getting in the drinking contest. I do not recall if we have ever seen her drugged, but this would seem to also suggest that she cannot be drugged, which might explain why the writers had to use the workaround of having father-flyboy protect her from the Feds.

Tying Syler to Danko allows them to make Danko expendible and the shapeshifting allows the writers to give him a way to replace Danko and operate with a budget in his pursuit of powers. That it seemingly is painful to shapeshift might be the writers setting up a limiting factor on the power, which is smart.

Danko blames Noah for Rebel eluding capture and it makes sense that he would go back underground for a bit since he must believe that his attempt to spring his mom-clone cost her life. It's like seeing his Mom die a second time and both partially his fault. That cannot feel good for a teen, or anyone really.

Bringing all of the Petrellis together and tying Syler to Danko and Noah effectively tightens many major characters into a single storyline, which fixes one of the major problems with the show, too many stories at the same time.

I wonder if Ma Petrelli's sister is going to turn out to be Syler's real mother?

Will anyone in America be interested in the government finally catching the serial killer known to the FBI as "sylar"? How will they explain it?

I cannot wait to see what Auntie can do. :D

Given that one sister is named Angela and has been portrayed almost devilish in actions, maybe the other sister has a wicked sounding name (Demona? ;) - Gargoyle's reference there, don't mind me) and is overly nice :D
