Heroes of the Borderlands

D&D (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

It's really odd to use KotB as starter set given all the work they are doing to get away from KotB-style adventures (i.e. adventures where humanoid creatures are just there to be killed because reasons). Yeah, they can modify it so it's something totally different, but then what's the point? Why not just make a new adventure. I'm perplexed.
Exactly my point. There is no creative reason to remake KotB.

It intrigues me that Greyhawk is getting the core and starter feature while the Realms get a two-book set.

That's more dual setting support than 5e has ever had
I agree
I was hoping for a Greyhawk book, so I was surprised to see dual setting support.
Probably Greyhawk in the new DMG will be left to DMs to populate.

I'm going to make an unpopular post here. I guess we should have expected a Borderlands adventure, but I just feel so tired by the whole thing. I have the original, the silver edition, the third edition, fourth edition, and the one that was used during the 5E playtest. The caves of chaos have been used so much, and they're pretty much an autopilot adventure.

I understand that this is where the hobby started but when we go back here over and over again we never seem to show how we've gone places since then. I remember running the caves in 5E as part of the playtest and thinking "here we go again."

Now that's not saying that if this nostalgia is your jam you shouldn't enjoy it, by any means, but I guess I'm wondering "is this what we want to showcase in the new edition?" Feel free to ignore the old man yelling at clouds.

My focus is not broad. I'm not sure how I even first heard of Shadowdark, but the cover jumped out at me and that was that.
A good source of info is Questing Beast's newsletter

I object to removing an option because some people think other people, who may or may not even be at your table and thus have any chance of affecting you, might in your opinion abuse it. That's what's being said here.
Fortunately they're pretty easy to add if you want to engage in nobody's favorite activity "debating what to do with prisoners for a couple hours".

I'm not upset. I just have an opinion on remakes. I don't think there should be a 2024 version of Keep on the Borderlands at all, and if there is, it should be like those 5e conversions you mentioned. WotC should make new adventures that don't rely on nostalgia for sales. Pool

That's my preference, anyway.
Look, I'm not going to tell you where to spill your digital ink, but it just feel unproductive to be posting so much about a product that you don't even think should exist.

To switch topics a little, what are your experiences with KotB? Have you played it just once or is something you've returned to?

I played it once, read it several times. It's currently incorporated as part of my Level Up-based sandbox campaign. The players haven't gotten there yet.
