D&D (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

I really hope Justice Armin gets to do his version of Dark Sun. Not long after it started to look like WotC wasn't going to ever bother (and I think that they really did give up), Justice posted/tweeted that he'd like to take a stab at it. He's only had more WotC work since then, so I could see them taking a look at what he came up with. Maybe he convinced them to give it a shot?

I'd also love to see him tackle Kara-Tur or Al-Qadim. Frankly, give him anything he wants that has "problematic" elements, I think he can handle them!
What work have they contributed to?

While I don't care much one way or another about Dark Sun (we never used it), a setting book based on different cultural mythology such as Kara-Tur or Al-Qadim would be amazing. I always want to do more to give other parts of my world a different feel, but it's also something I have difficulty with.

I think he was lead on Radiant Citadel and Infinite Staircase, and this Borderlands that we're discussing.

See now, that is an example of good update that actually adds something valuable to the original. It can be done.
I think it should be the go-to example on how to do it right. Add some stuff, clarify some stuff, name more things, improve the art, improve the layout (make it easier on the DM). Keep everything that made the original great.

Exactly. Let's never reboot a comic book. Let's never cover an existing song, adapt a book to a play or movie, remake a movie, remaster a video game, or make a new edition of a game. New ideas only.
I’m going to actively disagree with myself, but sometimes, the changes do become a core part of the character.

Batman’s « don’t kill rule » and « doesn’t like guns » weren’t part of the original character, but they resonated with other elements of his character and have been widely adopted by the fandom.

Likewise, most recent portrayals of shapeshifters tend to have them be genderfluid, which absolutely makes sense for a creature that is literally gender-fluid.

I agree. For example, some of the most famous songs were covers, remakes of the original. Aretha Franklin wasn't the first one to sing R-E-S-P-E-C-T, but if people recognize the song it's likely what they think of, not Otis Reding. I see nothing wrong with remaking something from 40-odd years ago.
Hey, if it’s good enough for Shakespeare, it’s good enough for me!

You know, I’ve even heard that there are some people on this board who play Level Up, an OGL version of 5e.

But I’m sure those people would never claim that the existence of Level Up erases 5e.

Improvements (even attempted ones) and additions are good. Re-makes for the sake of cashing in on nostalgia are, IMO, not.

What is leading you to believe this future product is an example of the latter and not the former?
What benefit (other than nostalgia-fueled sales) does the adventure gain by referencing a 40+ year old adventure with a design paradigm very different from modern WotC's? There might be such a benefit, but I have no reason to believe WotC saw one that didn't have a $ in front of it.
