Heroes of the Borderlands

D&D (2024) Heroes of the Borderlands

Yeah, I don't think WotC would have brought back the Caves of Chaos at this point without the changes made in the new Monster Manual to eliminate the idea that "these guys look funny, so it's OK to kill them."

Ideally, they will also make it clear that the inhabitants of the Caves of Chaos are actively malicious and dangerous and not just living their best lives, creating homemade crafts to sell on Fantasy Etsy (which is basically just the same as regular Etsy at this point).
That's my theory. "these" humanoids are doing evil stuff.....not "all" humanoids of this type are evil.

Fiends even manes and lemures aren't exactly innocent.

Every being, every creature in D&D is fictional. Many are based on the real world to one degree or another but any resemblance will always be superficial.

If I have a "safely assume they're evil" species in my campaign there will be an explicit in world reason for it, usually a supernatural one. But it's a game and if I join a group where a DM says all slurgs are evil, I'll accept it. Even if I don't yet know that they're evil because they're the reincarnation of evil people who in their next life may be "rewarded" by reincarnating as a mane or lemure with hopes of working their way up the food chain.

I'm aware. Some things are pure evil as such. Demons, devils, Illithids come to mind. Exceptions nay exist but for the first two they're either dead or likely to change into something else.

Most traditionally evil things eg orcs are more nurture not nature. Problem is they're lead by evil gods, priests, culture.

Sentient creatures that require sentients for sustenance may be evil or may as well be if not. Even if they try preying on evil doers their existence is likely a problem.

If your neighbors want to hurt or eat you that's a problem is where I draw the line. Some grey areas exist obviously.
