The maps you're talking about positively are extremely popular and, at least for a time, sold very well for decent coin in the aftermarket. I've never understood why WotC didn't make more of them.

The ones that you're speaking of negatively, like the ones sold for Pathfinder, have the benefit of being able to be drawn on. They're fine, I guess. I honestly like both approaches more than I like tiles, for example, but I agree with you about the folds. But you can make them flat with an iron (put a cloth over them, don't put the iron directly on them).
The Pathfinder ones, I probably should (oops, I meant shouldn't) speak so negatively of, as I have and have used over 50. They are great maps, but the folds are irritating. Thank you for the ironing tip, I will definitely try that! Much appreciated.

There are four species options with two copies each for a total of eight Species Cards: two humans, two dwarves, two elves, and two halflings. Each Species Card has unique art on the front and is tied to one of the eight Player Character Tokens in the product. Additionally, Kate Irwin, the art director on this set, did something really cool with these cards. If you place two of the same species side by side, they actually form a little scene. The dwarves are at a forge, the humans are building a house, and as one might expect—the haflings are having a meal! This also helps to showcase that any species can be a member of a certain class; none of them are wearing armor or holding a spellbook.
