HeroForge - Passing the Torch

If I only knew a single damned thing about Excel formatting, but unfortunately I do not :(. I will be following this, though. HeroForge is hands down the best thing that ever happened to my game. I'm pretty sure my DM would agree. Glad to see the ball is still in play...

Yes, Shannon is no longer supporting HeroForge, so we must answer the call.

A Yahoo group was created to gather people interested in the further support of this magnificent character creation spreadsheet.

Join if you are interested in seeing the continued support of HeroForge:

HeroForge must be the most complex character sheet I've ever seen. People looking for other options are welcome to take a look at my D&D3.5 Multiclass Character Sheet - Unlike HeroForge, mine is Shareware (and uses no copyrighted information) but it *does* support EPIC Characters ... And it's getting excellent reviews by Users...

Check it out if you wish:

Nice reviews you've got there, Richard. One in particular catches my eye,

"GAK! I'd a swore I'd never pay for something like this online, but I've been using your program for 6 weeks and finally figured you were due " - Anonymous 2004/07/26

I'm sure the person responsible for that comment is glad to no longer see his name attatched to it, but it was his understanding that the comment would be removed, as he no longer uses or supports your sheet.

When HeroForge has an easy way to modify and add data, lemme know.

That would be a great suggestion to make to the group. I've added and modified data in HF with no problems and I don't know VBA or have extensive knowledge of Excel. Data is set logically in spreadsheets, some hidden.

HF the most complex? You've obviously never seen the monstrosity that was Steve's Excel based charsheet. Yikes. And it was even fairly popular.

But, nice plug for your own anyway.

Heroforge first, now Metacreator

I agree- Heroforge was never complex or difficult IMO. When we first began using it, my daughter was 9 - I didn't even need to explain it to her. It was easier than reading through all the class/race/feat stuff in the book.

I recently switched to Metacreator - a nice, no-frills product, that (from my use of it) is not only quick for character generation, but makes tweaking, changing, and/or adding stuff super easy. I'm using it for a D&D game as well as a Savage Worlds game. In both cases I am using a home-brew setting (no other kind for me) that required a bit of hands-on when it came to controlling all the different junk I was making. With Metacreator, it works great for organization, you save your own data in its own place (instead of making numerous copies of a spreadsheet). A lot less HD space (though HeroForge never seemed too huge), excellent support, and a great group of users to ask questions of.

Though MC has a short learning curve (depending on the template) of about 15-30 minutes, it is by far the best product I've used for all aspects of character/NPC/Monster/Magic/Spells/Items/Gear/etc/etc management that I've come across in a long time. It is much more than just a character generator!

Good Day!

I agree that HF is pretty good. It's easy to use, seems to know what's going on. I found some errors in Lizardman once and sent it to Black Bart and he fixed it right away.

But, like most GMs I reckon, my campaign is not entirely vanilla. Plus, the ability to add/modify spells, races, classes, items, etc... would VASTLY expand it's usefulness, especially if that data were in external sets that could be read by Excel. Then the users could begin entering data from all the books.

I think the reason it was popular was A: it was comprehensive. I know many people learned a lot about D&D just from using that sheet and B: it was relatively easy to add/modify new stuff. Then D&D 3.5 came out and everything went to poop.
