I'm going to say no. Usually, drawing an item, like a weapon, does not provoke. Since it's a free action, I think that would at least put it on the same level as a weapon and not provoke.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it says right here in my DMG, that "Retrieving any specific item from a haversack is a move-equivalent action". Not a free action. I couldnt say about provoking an attack of opportunity, as i can see it going both ways (since the item is always on top, it doesnt take much to get it, so it wouldnt provoke one, but since you have to actually grab the item, it might....who knows?)

That line has been covered in the errata. It is now a Free Action.

The "retrieve a stored item" action normally does provoke an AoO (PHB Table 8-4). I can't find an explicit rule which states Free Actions can't provoke AoO. However, since no free action defined in the PHB does provoke an AoO, I'm inclined to say no.

However, it is not unreasonable to rule otherwise. Your DM may argue that because the action is already defined as provoking an AoO, it still does even if it is a free action.

AoO and Hewards Handy Haversack

As pulling a item from the pack may not cause a AoO, actually using said item may. Eg. drinking a potion, using a scroll, etc.. that should cover the question.
