Xxyox, did you specifically seek out an SLA? Some Cable companies will get you an SLA and charge you business rates for it.

Nope, it was offered up front when I closed on the home I had built four years ago. I pay home rates for the service.

So maybe I've been given such good service from service providers that my expectations are too high for a company like WotC. I don't play WoW and I can say ojne thing with absolute certainity, after reading what you ahve to agree to in your subscription, I never will.

No website is always online. That's just not how things work, no matter how good your IT people are, or how prepared you are for huge traffic.

And besides, ENWorld's been slow as all hell the last couple of days. If we're getting it this bad(and I'm assuming its a 4e related traffic spike), of course WotC's getting slammed.

Of course, the difference between a marketing based web site, like www.wizards.com, and what the D&D Insider is going to be is, I don't pay for access to www.wizards.com.

Community supported forums are a different matter, too. Even if I donate, I don't expect any guarantees, and I've donated to several. If somebody sells me a service, I expect some form of guarantee they will deliver on what I pay for.

But its stil la part of the WotC site, like it or not.

As others have said, there will very likely be a line in the ToS saying that they can't promise it will always be up. Its the way of the internet. That's how things are. There are no real guarantees, and if they put one up, and then the website crashed, they'll end up in even MORE trouble.

You said its not comparable to WoW or other MMOs...but it is. That's a service paid for, and yet downtime happens. Servers crash, things need to be restarted, updates require shutdowns.

Its the way of the world of technology and that isn't changing anytime soon.

I find that interesting and possibly confusing, but sadly my NDA doesn't allow me to carry this any further to clarify things. At any rate that's a pretty good deal you've got going there.
It's not hard to get a SLA with any company, you just have to move a step above the first person that answers the phone. ;)

What?!!! How the heck did you manage that for home service? I have Comcast and when I asked about it, they told me they only credit for service if it is lost for more than three consecutive hours. You are implying that you get credited for any downtime at all.

My Guess is this doesn't cause any need to worry about the level of service in the future...

It's taking a big hit. Not a normal big hit but a BIG hit... Even the people who aren't going to hop on board the DI train are still clicking the site hoping for a glimpse of what 4e is... So the hit is bigger then big.

Add to the fact that I bet they're diverting most of the resources to those logging in at Gencon.. so when they show off the nice new product at a huge seminar people paid for, the design team doesn't have that Bill Gates Blue Screen of Death red face moment...
