Hi all, just thought I would introduce myself.

I'm a staunch 2e AD&D supporter but have just brought myself the 3e Core Rule books and am faced with .... D20.

You bought the 3rd Ed. Core Rulebooks just in time to witness version 3.5 with the Revised Core Rulebooks in July. ;)

Welcome to the boards!!

I won't try to spit out another d20 defintition, the ones that have been put forth do a good job. I will say that I love skills and feats and the color they have added to the game. Please check out some of the great story hours that are on the boards as well. There's a link to the one I am a part of in my sig.

Ohh, and beware of Crothian. He is a little odd. ;)

Hey, Crothian's a good guy, he's not that odd. Just because he has around 17,000 posts doesn't mean he's odd. I have played in games with him before and I can tell you he's a very stable person. You can see a picture of him here: Ohio Gameday

You don't really have to worry about Crothian. What you have to look out for is the 'Gnome' and Hivemind threads.

Thanks for the big warm one!

Airwolf ... gomes and hivemind ... hmm ... I usually avoid Kender threads too ... thanks for the warning ;)

Upper Crust ... he he he .. yeah, I knew it was about to happen .. but also know that the new rulebooks(in full) will cost me £30 each instead of £16 ... or £5 each if you know the right people ... perhaps that's reason why i got the old ones :D

i'm looking forward to leaping in on some posts ... so beware of some nice, uninformed, uneducated posts on all matters d20....

Welcome Golandrinel, always great to see another person from Albion around here!

I've found this to be the most consistently good-natured community on the web, and I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself here.

My take on d20?

One of the key ideas that WotC wanted was "options not restrictions", so in 3e as compared to 1/2e D&D there are generally a lot more options that can be taken, and players (as well as DM's) will find less straitjackets and more opportunities to weigh up which route best fits a particular character concept.

Another key idea was to provide a consistent basic rules mechanic, and rules for all situations (to make it easier for new DM's to handle stuff without guessing). this tends to make some stuff - particularly combat - a bit more rules heavy than it used to be.

Cheers

Glad to hear it mate! :)

hi Golandrinel.

d20 to me is a vast improvement on 2e. i was a fairly casual gamer until 3e, but now i DM, buy rulebooks and generally obsess. i think the key is internal consistancy and less of a rule bloat. oh yeah and no kits.

the game is more fun for me now than it was before. i hope you like it.
