Hidding from Discern Location

Luddite

First Post
While flipping though some of the high level spells, I found this little jewel. It allows the caster to know the exact locaiton of the target (person or object) at the time of casting.

It also states that nothing short of Divine Intervention will stop it.

I now find this spell somewhat problematic. I have already established that some of my NPCs have access to 8th and 9th level spells. One of the NPCs is currently hiding from another NPC. (The party is sort of caught in the middle)

Any thoughts on how to keep the one NPC hidden?

The NPC needs to be really friendly with a Diety.

Of course, the character must have seen the creature or have.

Don't forget:
To find a creature with the spell, the character must have seen the creature or have some item that once belonged to it.

I almost forgot - I think that odd planar locations will hide you. Things like portable hole, Mord’s Magnificent Mansion, etc.

That's because those places don't really have a location, in the conventional sense.
The spell reveals the name of the location (place, name, business name, building name, or the like), community, county (or similar political division), country, continent, and plane where the subject lies.

I think if you were in a Mord’s Magnificent Mansion all you would get is that your subject is in an extradimensional dwelling.

So, with that in mind, the key is no not really be at a "location."

Ahh this will work. Some variation on the Extra-Dimensional pocket. Simple and Elegant, but still requires at least access to level 7 spells.

Thanks

Well, Discern Location can infallibly find anything, but Mind Blank infallibly prevents things from being found. The FAQ says that Mind Blank wins, because defense generally takes precedence over offense.

I see it right, that the information gained via discern location is not enough for teleportation, right?

My players were a little upset, when I said them after they discerned the location of a bad guy, their teleport to him would fail. ;)

Of course, they were then able to research where the location is, because they had enough information (names of places) to pinpoint it (they just didn't know it before), and travel there normally! :D

Teleport is keyed to familiarity with the place, and Discern Location only gives you knowledge of where the Location is. Of course, that would work with dimension door, but this one has a short range.

IMO to teleport there you have to cast first Scry. That will give you the neccesary mental image.

Personally, I would have the spell give the location of these extra-dimensional hidey-holes.

e.g. "Mostin the Metagnostic is in a Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion, in a meadow by a stream 4 miles southwest of Deorham, in Wyre."

Hmm, I'm not sure I'd agree.

Largely because the Magnificent Mansion is not in that location, merely that its gate opens at that point. I don't think you could even safely say that it is coterminous with that position. To say that an extradimensional space is at such and such a location is something of an oxymoron - otherwise it wouldn't be extradimensional.

I'd allow a character to use an Epic Spell to get into an MMM, but short of that, I think they're pretty much impregnable.

Unless the story demands otherwise, of course.

You could easily go either way on this one.

In any case, the key is go somewhere that isn't anywhere. Someplace where when you are there, you are nowhere.

I think the only places like that are the extradimensional spaces that various spells create. None of those spaces are permanent, fo course.

A permanent one could be created, I suppose, but it would then be, essentially, a new plane.
