Hello all! Maybe I can get some feedback that I can take to my gaming crew. I posted this on the montecook.com site as well, but I wanted some additional feedback.
I am sure this has been rehashed a hundred times, but I can't find the threads and I could use some help with clarification. And feel free to correct me when I am wrong.
Here is my understanding about how hide works with sneak attack. When you hide, you need to have some kind of cover or concealment, period. With HIPS (hide in plain sight - shadow dancer) you just need a shadow and you can "wink out" with a successful opposed check with spot.
now....
1. if a character is hiding, and an enemy passes by, can the character make a sneak attack as long as he wins an opposed spot-hide check? i.e. has the hidden status taken the enemy Dex modifier away?
2. if an enemy is engaged by other partymembers and the character has spent a round hiding, can they then make a successful sneak attack as long as an opposed roll is successful? Or is the enemy "aware" and thus does not qualify as having lost his dex bonus? If so, what kind of modifiers to spot do you normally give?
3. With HIPS, can a character "wink out" (hide) with a move-equiv action, and then strike with a ranged sneak attack in the same round? Or melee attack if they are within range?
Example... Shadow Dancer Xion and his fellow party members are in a grand melee with orcs. Xion takes a 5-ft step and then hides as a move equiv action. As his other action he readys -- in case an enemy moves into and adjacent square. An orc moves on his turn and crosses next to Xion -- can he sneak attack him as long as he wins an opposed hide-spot?
4. with sniping, can a hidden character sneak attack and then hide as a move equiv action in the same round? Is this how it is supposed to work?
Ok... so. Is there a state of "hidden" that is described in the any 3.5 core rulebooks?
What is hidden? I have heard "effectively invisible", concealed, etc. Once "hidden", does a rogue get a sneak attack even if the opponent is in melee? But invisibility is different, since it just enhances a hide bonus by +40 when still and +20 when moving (and when would you need hide if you are invisible, anyway?)
What is considered an outrageous hide score? There is a 14th level rogue in my game with a 33 hide. (cloak of elvenkind helps...) and so a -20 to rehide is not very tough. and it seems like an exploitation of the rules.

I like the Song & Silence rule about moving up to your hide ranks in feet, i.e. it allowed you to move a number of feet without concealment equal to your hide *ranks*. This only helps in multiples of 5 because you can't move 6'. (What it does allow you to do though is charge through the bushes, stepping in the 5' square where you would "be seen", and then hitting someone. With 10 ranks they can be 15' away from the bushes.)

But we are trying to keep to the new core books and not the splat books.

Any thoughts?
