Hiding fom Magic Missle

Quick question, one of my players has some insane bonuses to HIDE. My next BBEG has MM... Can the PC be targeted while hidden?

If not any ideas for giving this player a scare, other that loading the BBEG with spot bonuses?

Thanks all!

a useful thing would be to put your BBEG in a large room, with nowhere to hide, and have it lit with numerous continual light spells. Not even your PC can hide in there.

Unseen Servants with mirrors.

Not sure if it's leagal, but think of the flavour of the situatuation when the BBEG suddenly suspects he is not alone and dispatches a bunch of floating mirrors so he can see around corners and behind columns...

A big, well, lit, square room is boring though. So what if the PC hides? Give the BBEG an item of true-seeing, or tremorsense, or scent. You can't hide from scent.

The PC can only hide from the BBEG if the BBEG can't see him. So if there is no where to hide then he can be targetted just fine.
The PC can hide if he has concealment or cover or a special class ability. He does not need to be totally unseen first. And yes, if the PC successfully hides, the BBEG cannot target the PC with magic missile.

What's a continual light spell? ;)

Try this broken spell from Complete Adventurer. Give the BBEG 10 ranks in Listen and BAM you can target anyone within 30 feet. Whee!

To target someone with a spell you have to see them. If they're hidden, you can't see'em and and hence can't target them.

You can't just declare you're hiding anywhere. You must have cover or concealment at all times to hide. Shadows count as concealment, unless you have darkvision, which of course pretty much every non-human BBEG does, so it's often not an option (and hence the reason why it's not called "Hide in Shadows" as in previous editions).

If your player has uber stealth skillz, take a look at the rules and make him use every one of those ranks. In the Complete Adventurer, there are rules for breaking cover. They're pretty brutal. If you're darting even so much as 5 feet between cover, your check gets very hard.

And of course, there are always area effect attacks.

Only problem with that approach is that uber stealth is often accompanied by high reflex saves and evasion. Still there are a few non-reflex area effect spells. Glitterdust comes to mind...
