How do you figure?
  • Anyone " ... can voluntarily forego a saving throw and willingly accept a spell's result" (PHB, p. 177).
  • Reflex " ... saves test your ability to dodge area attacks" (PHB, p. 136).
  • In my opinion, a deliberate "ground zero" blast indicates no real desire to dodge or evade the results.

I'd say you get a reflex save according to the rules. You are trying to set it off and avoid the damage. A good tactic to use as a last resort in my opinion.

As for the Paladin sidetrack... It seems like the arguments that say you can't do it would also apply to a fireball. Fireballs have a large radius (can affect a large group) and deal damage to living creatures. So in conclusion, Respecting Life is good. But if you take it to an extreme and don't allow any killing then you are adding to the alignment rules. It says you protect INNOCENT life. As long as you aren't targeting innocent people you are fine.

Jumping into a crowd of innocents to chop them to bits = evil
Using a bomb strapped to your back to do the same thing = evil
Jumping into a room filled with the evil Lich's minions and chopping them to bits = good
Using a bomb strapped to your back to do the same thing = good.

As you can see, ENworld has a variety of rules opinions.

Domino, just ask your DM. They have to determine whether a "ground zero" detonation entitles you to a saving throw. It's their final call.

So if the Player's Handbook paladin charges into a group of random, supposedly-evil (or confirmed evil) folks and blows himself up to take them out, he'd lose his paladinhood before finishing the act; no Divine Grace to help him survive the blast. It's not an honorable way to fight, anyway.
Agreed.

Why trying to ignore the damage anyway ?

Just pick a race that is immune to fire and ignite the necklaces. No save requiert, you just "take" the damage.

A red half-dragon barbarian, using his breath weapon ON the necklaces, and BOOM ! You got one wrecking critter.

A phoelarch (a phoenix-man from MMIII) actually gets healed fire effects, so just use a scorching ray on the necklaces and you have the same effects as a healing spell, along with the damage around you.

The paladin suicide bomber got art! It sure looks like the Helm of Brilliance
