I have always had a problem with Paladins, mostly due to the their alignment restriction. In 3rd Edition we have seen the rules on Druid alignment relaxed, is it time for Paladins? I think a more general Holy Warrior core class would be better. One designed to be flexible enough to serve a god of any religion. What do you all think?

I think Paladin should be a prestige class, on the opposite you then still have the blackguard, and then you can be a fighter/cleric if you are not he chosen of the good/champion of evil. That's holy warrior enough for me.

To summarize: I think the most good and the most evil in the world deserve their own prestige class, and the rest does not.

I think they should put the Blackguard, Paladin, and Holy Liberator on the same footing.

Either all of them are prestige classes, or all of them core classes.

*shrug*.

There's this trend. Folks think it's a good idea to make things as generic as possible. I can understand the sentiment of wanting to make the game more flexible, but it can be taken too far. Eliminating the paladin, or making it "just like the other holy warriors" counts as taking it too far, to me.

Sure, its not "symmetric". But failure to be symmetric makes it more unique, gives it more flavor. If you turn the paladin into just one more prestige class (probably one of nine highly similar alignment-warrior classes), you rob it of something dear to it's heart, a thing that makes it special. IMHO.

I'd like to see it replaced with the holy warrior class from Book of the Righteous. Then again, I'd like to see that holy warrior class expanded for evil gods as well. :)

Yay Paladin PrC!

I'm working on a Paladin prestige class that's easy to take at lowish level, so you do have to earn entry in-game, but it's not too much of a pain. IMHO each church should have a somewhat custom Paladin PrC, so I'm trying to make my PrC "generic" enough to allow easy customization.

I don't think there's any need for Blackguards or any other matching Evil Paladin PrCs. IMHO Evil characters should be allowed to trade XP for Evil Super Powers, but should otherwise advance as normal Fighters / Wizards / whatevers.

A holy warrior PrC is fine. A holy warrior PrC replacing the paladin is not. Paladins are more than generic holy warriors.

Paladings give LG gods their champions their own Core class. I don't think this is really fair, I see no need for such a specific core class.
