Hit Points, Hit Points, Hit Points

How do players determine hit points when they level

  • Max HP for the level

    Votes: 5 2.9%
  • Half the die value

    Votes: 15 8.6%
  • Make em roll

  • Other

Roll?? They get max HP at first level and that's good enough for the likes of them! They want more? They can take the Toughness feat!

Okay, that was kidding. ;)

I give them max at 1st - 3rd to give them a bit of a cushion, then I have them roll. They have the option of taking 50% max without rolling, but once the die is thrown, they live with it.

I give them a choice. Take 1/2 your die plus one, or roll... but you have to decide BEFORE you roll... if you roll, you take it no matter what. Wizards make out pretty well this way...
That's what I do, except for the "plus one" part.

We make 'em roll, but they get to reroll a one. However, if the reroll turns up as a one, in our view that character was destined to get a one, so they are stuck with it. Seems to work pretty well, though it's not fun when the dice decide to hate you for a level or two.

ditto this method for our group.

Max HP at 1st level.

Level 2+:
Hit Points – At each level gained, Roll, except minimum additional hit points are the average of the die, rounded up. E.g., d4/3, d6/4, d8/5, d10/6, d12/7.

As DM, I always bump up the HP of monsters and NPCs as well - usually to 70-100% of maximum.

I like hit points. :)

The same.

This is what we do now.

We have in the past done the reroll ones thang, and you choose if you want what you or the DM rolled.

I love to roll dice.

Peace and smiles :)

Max HP at first level. At other levels, like National Acrobat, I have them roll and then I also roll behind the screen. Without seeing my roll they have to decide which to keep.

Roll. You can, however, reroll it once, but you must take the reroll even if it's worse than the first roll. That way, if you get a really crappy roll, you get to try again, but if you're just average, you better not blow it and risk getting worse. It's a good compromise, I think, between the random rolls (which, I admit, I kind of like for tradition's sake) and a more structured HP advancement.

Max at 1st level, and 3/4 the die subsequently (ie d4 = 3, d6 = 4, d8 = 6, etc). I also use point buy for character generation.

Random numbers are for playing the game, not making up characters, IMO.

I agree with Hong on this.
The randomness of using the dice to generate your character really helps keep them all diverse,
but someone who is always pretty lucky with the dice- playing with someone who always seems to roll poorly- can cause the other character to seem "better" and the players have no control over it.
Using point buys and fixed hit points keeps all of the PCs 'on the same page' with each other.
