No free rides, we don't play 'easy mode' here. You roll that die and keep the result, and keep your whinging about it to a minimum or I bring back level drain mechanics for undead creatures, mofos. :devilish:

Oh, and btw - CON bonuses only apply once at first level only. Suck on that whilst you tremble with fear when rolling your hit point die. Bwa-hahahahaaaaaa.
I tasted that sauce at my first D&D basic game ever as a solo player with a M-U with only 1HP and no Con. He died three times from the same kobold in the entrance of a B2 cave. I thought D&D is a stupid game. I'll never play again. 6 months later a found a different DM.

Every long rest, the PCs roll all their Hit Dice, and maximize the lowest roll. If this total exceeds your current max hit points (after adding in Con Mod), then that becomes your max hit points.

Soloing a brand new player with a 1st level, 1hp mage into the Caves of Chaos... yes that is indeed a very clueless (or young and inexperienced) DM, yikes!

People who play 5E: "There's too much hp bloat!"
Also people who play 5E: "We don't roll hit points, everyone gets at least the average at every level. And we use point buy, so Con is always everyone's second-highest stat. And..."
I for one am not in the boat complaining about 'hp bloat' I'm not trying to kill my PCs.

My preference is the average, no option for rolling (this poll has a bad set of options) and that is what is used in my campaign. The abilities are not generated randomly either, so it would be counterproductive to introduce randomness at this point. Especially at low levels the random HP can be super swingy. Average is balanced in the sense that no one gets randomly more or less HP than others and it is also balanced in a sense that it is what the system expects. (Roll, but if it is low take the average obviously leads to HP bloat.)

As a DM, I give players a choice between rolling or average at each level past first. As a player, I exclusively choose the average.
