You know what I would find interesting? If Persephone was once the One, and the Merovingian was the Architect. Merovingian refers to a French dynasty a few hundred years ago, so the possibility of him being a "ruling" program is very plausible. Well somehow he became enamored with the humans he oversaw and became weak. Persephone comes along, a One but lacking something, possible the willingness to die for her beliefs. So she makes a deal with him and goes with him into exile, being made somehow into a program just like him. Persephone was the wife of Hades in greek mythology, the daughter of Demeter goddess of the harvest, so she may represent life in hell so to speak.
Then again, it could be absolutely nothing, and irrelevant to the next movie.
