Holding your breath

The DMG (p.304) says you can hold your breath for 2 rounds per point of CON.

The PHB (p.84) says you can hold your breath for 1 round per point of CON (half that if you take standard actions).

Which is correct?

There was a thread on this earlier, i think before the crash.
My vague memory of it is that the PHB is the "Primary Source" and the one to follow

My choice is to talk with the DM/Players and decide on one either collectively or by DM fiat. I don't think either way is wrong considering both sources contain different info on the subject (as opposed to primary source principles).

The DMG is the primary source in this case because the rule concerns "drowning", not swimming. This is further evidenced by the change in the leatherbound PH.

You do bring up a very valid question, though. A player will first see the rule under the Swim skill and may consider that the primary source. But, when you stop to think about what the rule is discussing, namely drowning (if you fail to hold your breath), then you realize the primary source contains the rules on drowning.

If nothing else, rehashing this is a good exercise for examining the primary source rule.
