Honey, how about becoming a vampire?

Hey all!

In our campaign, we have a vampire NPC (A friend who is controlled by a super bad-assed other vampire which we are having alot of trouble killing). My character (lvl 17 almost 18 Cleric of Mask with an evil alignment) has the option of being turned into a vampire by our NPC friend. Question is: is it worth it? what are the advantages/disadvantages? Our group is generally more on the evil side (having done the good side before, we eventually turned evil..different flavor). Need some help here to decide if its good or not...

Details are appreciated :)

Thanks!

Well... at first it's a HUGE power boost. Then it's annoying cause you won't level up for the next 8 levels or so your buddies will get. LA +8, Baby!!! And you're usually dying and losing a level to become a vampire.

So if you expect to play this char a little bit longer, don't. You won't make level 18 in the next three years. ;)

Then have a good look at vampires weaknesses. Being chased away by a kid with a mirror might be annoying.

Running water .... ugly. Simply ugly.

Turning a PC into a vampire is a good way of turning a PC paladin into a blackguard... NPC! If you need a new BBEG.

But playing that thing? Nononono. I never would.

Wanna keep those level 9 spells you just got? Don't. Or wait till you're level 18.

It would make for a very interesting game development, certainly, but if your DM will make you pay the LA cost of the template, it's not worth it in terms of character power. The cleric's power is his spells - and stopping that progression for several levels for the vampire template takes away from that power.

Despite the cost in terms of character power - I say "Go for it!"

In either case, the new vampire or spawn is under the command of the vampire that created it and remains enslaved until its master’s destruction. At any given time a vampire may have enslaved spawn totaling no more than twice its own Hit Dice; any spawn it creates that would exceed this limit are created as free-willed vampires or vampire spawn. A vampire that is enslaved may create and enslave spawn of its own, so a master vampire can control a number of lesser vampires in this fashion.

It's a trap!

Go for it

Its a huge power boost. However, you're not likely to gain a level anytime soon. The rest of the party would be lvl 27 when you get your 19th Cleric level. However, you already have 9th level spells.

How much Con do you have? The higher it is now, the more becoming Undead is going to hurt.

Also there is the bit about being your "Sire's" slave until you're released... or they are destroyed.

If you weren't a caster you'd have little to lose by gaining this template. However, your buddies will be well into Epic Spells (10+ slots, or actual Epic Spells) before you get enough Cleric to follow suit.

On a side note, I consider Vampire worth +6 LA... as it isn't much better than being a Ghost (+5 LA, and arguably much more powerful).

The biggest disadvantage of RPing a vampire is that you are now that guy.

Don't be that guy.

Really? In this day and age...

Being under the control of the NPC vampire (the master, actually) could be kinda unfun, no?

Or is that other vampire free?

And, of course, whatever he tells you, he can keep you under control... you are pretty much relying on an (evil) vampire's honesty there... ;)

Bye
Thanee

If you totally want to go vampire... use the Vampire Spawn level progression. Gives the fun of leveling up, is less severe on the ECL, and... gives you the vampire's flavour. :)

Unless the DM house rules otherwise, Vampire Spawn progress is only available if you are of 4 HD or less.

Right?
