D&D 4E Hopefully D&D 4E will give us feats every level . . .

I love getting feats, but I think the frequency of which you get them in the standard rules it what makes them feel all the more attractive. I'm happy with the way it is, but then again I am not much of a tweaker of the rules...

I want a feat every time I gain a level. I'd happily sacrifice class features for a feat each and every level.
I know Andy Collins has experimented with this in his somewhat lower magic Umber campaign. You can find his rule changes here: http://www.andycollins.net/Campaigns/Umber/Umber.htm

Might be some tidbits in there worth mining... And like Rodrigo and Mouseferatu touched upon, Iron Lore should be a goldmine for these kinds of ideas.

Cheers!

Maybe it would depend on the feat.

For example, multiple skill-boost feats (+2 bonus to 2 skills) would probably be less damaging to game balance (whatever that means) while every-level combat feats may overpower too quickly.

Still, if you could rotate the type of feat that's taken at each level then it might be doable without changing anything else. For example, at level 1, you can choose any feat. At level 2 (and every 3 levels thereafter), you can only choose a non-combat oriented feat (such as a skill boost feat), then at level 3 (and every 3 levels thereafter), you can choose any feat, and at level 4 (and every 3 levels thereafter) you can choose a combat-oriented feat or metamagic/item creation feat (as desired by class).

Hmmm..I like it! Now I just have to sell it. ;)

I love feats, but I think taking them every level would really make characters a lot of the same unless a lot more were introduced. I'd prefer to see various choices along a classes path that allow you to better customize your character. Am I the only one that liked Skills & Powers? I know it could be taken advantage of, but I think the rules were perfect for creating unique characters.

There was a suggestion to key bonus feats (ala bonus skill points) off of cha. Something like

10-11 0
12-13 1
14-15 2
16-17 3
17-18 4
etc

The feat could not be 'any' feat, it had to be a general feat from a list that mostly included the +2/+2 feats and other more 'natural' feats. If you had one bonus feat you get it at 1st, then the next at 4th, 8th, 12th, etc.

And something I just thought of, if you raise the bar to 1 feat/2 levels then you could penalize feats for negative Cha. Ha! Dump stat no more...no one would take a neg cha if it meant losing your level 1 feat!
