His background is quite despicable. I'll try to make it at least PG-13

He began his career (before gaining actual assassin level) as an assassin working for an evil wizard called Malachie near Phlan in the moonsea area (in Forgotten Realms). He had to do the usal stuff evil wizards needs, young virgins, newborn children, stuff like that. All the while making allies of the familly of his victims ! Once, he crossed a vampire which he slew. He didn't know that this encounter would have tremendous repercutions latter.
One day, Malachie summoned a powerful Yugoloth lord. Malachie was turned insane by the outcome and Donavan Ritcher (the half-elf vampire assassin) found a new boss; some kind of demon. Then he did even more despicable things, the usual things demons needs, souls and pregnant women, stuff like that.
Always the pragmatic professionnal, devoted to Cyric, he passed he free time harassing paladins and corrupting them before slaying them.
One day, his demonlord sent him on a quest that would yet cause him to get a new boss. A powerful lich named Asperatus hired him to sire a child that would allow Asperatus to reincartate. He had to betray the demonlord and join Asperatus' forces and made a very powerful ennemy, a demonlord, nothing less !!! Now he was back to the things evil wizards needs again. That wizard had very obscure and long term plans so he sent him to Amn to join and assassin guild working in the name of Cyric. He did a few usual things assassins in a guild needs to do, slaying kings and queens, ursuping throne and political moves. Once he had to kill a dragon while working for a beholder. That's when he aquired his +5 dagger of wounding. It's chaotic evil and intelligent. Donavan still haven't discovered all of it's powers but that dagger is thirtsy for blood.
Then, his guild sent him on a holy quest in the name of Cyric. He was to build a city with a temple devoted to Cyric. While on his quest, he got tricked by a vampire. That vampire asked him if he wanted to become a vampire or not. He had a day to choose. On that day, he sent a message to his true boss Asperatus to ask what he thought about that. But he didn't answer in time. Now Asperatus is another ennemy of Donavan. No matter what he would've chose, Donavan was trapped. He was to accept or be destroyed. That, he didn't know before he had chosen to accept the vampire's offer.
One of the vampire's slave turn Donavan into a vampire. His intiation rite of passage was to slay his master. Then he was a free vampire to join a secret vampire society. That's when he learned that the vampire he met a year or so before used to be that vampire's master !
Donavan is now trying to discover that dark and obscure society that seems to be covering Faerun ! He now works for another vampire who is now teaching him the dark and strange etiquette of that secret vampire society. He is rejecting Cyric, has that vampire society is composed of atheist only and had to get rid of his dishonnorable mace of disruption. That's when he aquired the +3 flaming keen vorpal bastard sword.
