Horizon Walker PrC

Well .... dang. And huzzah! I'm playing a ranger currently, and that's handy to know :)

Another trick: Look very carefully at your spell list once you get to 4th level Ranger and above. You may not be able to cast the spells yourself, but there are a number of nifty "in case of emergency" spells that you cast with 95% or 100% effectiveness from a scroll.

This works better for the Paladin (Remove Paralysis, Dispel Magic). The Ranger does have a number of specialized spells that you would never bother to prep for the day but work very well when the time is right.

TWD vs Imp Shield Bash is definitely a win for the latter in terms of AC, but the damage potential of the former is usually higher (since shields are less effective as a weapon than say, a shortsword).
True - although the damage difference for light shield spikes is only on average a single point, and that only when you actually get to attack with the weapon.
Also, while magical AC bonuses from shields are cheap, combining them with magical weapon bonuses as well becomes more expensive than just having to enchant weapons.
No it doesn't - you're getting two sets of bonuses in a situation where normally you could only get one - so it's not more expensive for the same gain - it's more expensive for more gain. There's not really much comparison here.

A single point, better criticals, and 9 lbs of saved weight for a medium-sized creature. For the higher DEX, lower STR characters that tend toward TWF in the first place, that last one can be a killer in the AC stakes.

(As noted, I personally think TWF+ISB is a great combination: it's cool and it is effective. But there are some negatives of the option. That said, if the the PC is pretty 'tanky' anyway, it's definitely the better choice.)

Actually, if the original poster is still here, any chance we can get the full stat block for the character? That way we can really twink him :) There might also be better options for reaching HW than Ranger levels, that we can suggest if we see the full picture.

More expensive for more benefit is still more expensive, in absolute terms - which can be an issue, if you aren't as cashed up as you'd like to be.

Level is irrvelevant? I always thought you had to be able to cast at least first level spells before you could use a magic item based off a spell.

No.

It just has to be on your class list. Your level is irrelevant.

Spell Trigger: Spell trigger activation is similar to spell completion, but it’s even simpler. No gestures or spell finishing is needed, just a special knowledge of spellcasting that an appropriate character would know, and a single word that must be spoken. Anyone with a spell on his or her spell list knows how to use a spell trigger item that stores that spell. (This is the case even for a character who can’t actually cast spells, such as a 3rd-level paladin.) The user must still determine what spell is stored in the item before she can activate it. Activating a spell trigger item is a standard action and does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

You might have to quote that a few more times before it sinks in Hyp...;)

Dude, I know you get bonuses to your Hide check for your tiny size category, but that's more than offset by the huge Gather Information bonuses we get trying to find a barechested blue dude in white tights and hat. Oh, and he's only three apples high. You sorta stick out.
