Horse attacking on a charge?

Oh, I forgot about rideby attack! Oh, well...

But, maybe there needs to be a feat created for animals that allows them to attack when performing a maneuver ressembling spring attack.

Or, maybe not...

There is. Spring Attack. Then you get into the issue if you can charge and spring attack then because Ride By requires a charge.

The horse can still Over Run or Bull Rush when using Ride By

This is true. They could just bull rush or something similar. But, I guess what I am trying to say is that maybe a feat should be created that included spring attack, a charge, and possibly a bull rush.

Well with trample, you could overrun the guy, get a hoof attack, get a normal attack, and then run by the guy.

I say that preety good for one charge action:)

Edit: Plus your attack is at a +4 for prone. I always knew I liked horseback for a reason:)

I play a character in Living Greyhawk with Mounted Combat, Ride-By Attack, Spirited Charge and Trample. NPCs live in fear of my Spirited Trampling Ride-By Charge.
The technique is to have the horse attempt the trip attack first, so that if it succeeds the lance attack has the +4 for a prone opponent. The extra attack from the horse as you go by (not provoking attacks of opportunity from your target) is just gravy.
On the other hand, my character is pretty useless in combat on the ground. And if the trip attack fails, and the opponent succeeds at the counter-trip, you are in trouble. Them's the breaks.

I have a halfling paladin that uses ride-by attack with spririted charge (and, by the way, wears Rhino Hide armor). Because he's a paladin, he also uses Divine Might - with his charisma of 20, that +5 damage.

Of course, charging is x4 damage for him, so, adding his +3 from STR and +3 from the lance's bonus (he's 13th level, so it's appropriate), he does +44 damage each strike, +96 once per day when smiting evil. That's not counting Power Attack or any othe damage boosters.

A regular fighter could optimize for criticals to further increase damage to X6 - a paladin does not have the feats to spare.

At this point, the bite from the dog doesn't mean much, so I don't worry about offense for the dog, I worry about defense - a dead mount is NOT a good thing!

Generally speaking, the proper mounted tactic is to use Ride-By Attack (hopefully with Spirited Charge as well) to deliver excellent damage, and don't get the mount directly into melee combat. Mounts tend to be rather fragile, and must be carefully protected.

Horse back is pretty cool. I just wish that my players would take advantage of this.

Then start plannin' for some money and horses you cheapskate! :p

Hey folks, let me tell you something about dkilgo. You have no idea how stingy with the gold this guy is when he runs a game. To give you an idea how starving we are, a couple of games ago, I found this really slick magic greatsword (my type of weapon). Turns out that the damn thing was cursed, and if I kept it, it would drive me insane and then turn me into the same creature that we killed, which is where I got the sword from in the first place.

I almost kept the sword. :D
