At this point, the bite from the dog doesn't mean much, so I don't worry about offense for the dog, I worry about defense - a dead mount is NOT a good thing!

Quite right. I also do everything I can to boost its saving throws.

It's amazing how much some characters (read: players) bond to the mounts. During an encounter about a month ago, the players surprised a herd of dire cape bufallo. They hideously underestimated the "mere herbivores" and combined with the gazelle stampede, about 4 horses were lost.

They were distraught. They don't NEED the horses; heck they actually slow them down vs. using the Druid's Feathers spell. But they like the horses.

IIRC there are natural armor, deflection, magic fang, and strength boosting items on various animals right now. All the mounts have at least chain barding and they've started debating mithril chain.

And I don't think anyone but the NPC paladin has the Ride feat.

For more fun, they should equip their horse with Celestial Chain - Fly once a day for 50 minute is very cool - even if you only use it for the increased movement speed.

I don't think I'd do that without a significant Ride skill, though.

Do you mean the Mounted Combat feat or the Ride skill or both ?

Horseshoes of Speed are an excellent item for anyone that wants to have an effective mount, but the big thing to consider for the mounted fighter is the Windrider PClass from MotW. It's a great class, and lets your mount (or mounts) survive at higher levels. Plus you can ride exotic mounts like Dragons, Aurumvorax and Carrion Crawlers. Highly recommended. If you ever wished your mount had a feat or two, it is the class for you.
