How Did Superman Do That?

Ok, I was thinking… Superman can do all sorts of super-human things, but how the heck did he manage to GET A JOB at the Daily Planet??

I just went through the hiring process at a new company, and the HR woman grilled me for over half an hour about my previous employers and what I’ve been doing for the past 10 years. She wanted to know all kinds of details about my work experience, my education, and any gaps in my employment….

So how did Clark Kent answer these questions when he applied at the Daily Planet?? Remember, he can’t lie…. Did he say he had a degree from UFS (the University of the Fortress of Solitude)? Did he say he had been “camping” at the North Pole for 10 years? Did he tell them about all the alien knowledge he had learned from the stored records of Krypton?

When they asked “Why do you want to be a reporter?” What did he say?

Did they really hire someone who hadn’t ever had a real job before? Someone who hadn’t been to college? Someone who apparently doesn’t know anything about journalism??

The only thing I can think is that in today’s world, you pretty much have to have a degree in journalism to be a reporter, but back in the early 20th century that wasn’t the case. Perhaps, there is also the fact that in the early 20th century, they didn’t do background checks, and contact your previous employers and such… but it still seems like a major plot hole to me.

It should be noted that in contrast, Spiderman (Peter Parker) is in college and finds work as a freelance photo-journalist, which is much more believable. But Kent gets a desk and a steady paycheck, with no credentials at all… WTF??

What do you think?

I think you forget that Supes did not arrive on Earth as a fully grown man.

Superman grew up in Smallville, was legally adopted by Ma & Pa Kent, went through schools, and so on. After his adoption, his credentials were 100% legitimate, and he has a school and lifehistory to back them up. The fact that they dont' detail that entire history in the comics doesn't mean it didn't happen.

That's what the TV show Smallville is for :)

Right.

But according to the movie (and I suppose the comics) he graduated High School and went off to the North Pole for 10 years to study in the Fortress of Solitude. He didn't get hired on at the Daily Planet until he was 30 years old.

So what was he doing for 10-12 years? What sort of degree did he have? And remember, he can't lie.

Why can't he lie? Man, if anyone is gonna lie, it's the people who tell you, "Oh, no! I cannot tell a lie!"

B***s***. If I told you that, would you believe me?

Don't just accept the crap Clark tells you at face value. He's a bastard, and a mean drunk.

Heck, supes lies everyday. I'm clark kent, a human and i always have to go to the bathroom when the world is in danger.

He's the ultimate lier. But supes history is talked about in the comics from time to time. HE went to college and highschool like normal people. But he managed to bypass the long interviews with his nice firm handshake.

You also need to remember that the job market in the 1940's (when he first started at the Planet) was MUCH different from the job market now.
Most people got jobs right out of high school, if they even bothered with HS at all.
Additionally, newspapers of the 1940's were hardly the "respectable" sinstitutions they are today. Look at the kinds of stuff Perry White had Clark, Lois & Jimmy covering - disasters, industrial accidents, robberies, murders. They were ambulance chasing tabloid reporters.
The Daily Planet was a lot more like the NY Post than the NY Times.

Man, Superman 3 says just how much of a mean drunk he is!

But, naw ... The Golden and Silver Age Superman ... They just didn't bother to go into it because it supposedly wasn't that important. After they redid continuity in the early 80's ('Post Crisis' for all the uber nerds like meself) then it was a good deal closer to Smallville. Or at least closer to that than the original movie.

As I say all too often ... the Silver Age was a wasteland.

You're absolutely correct. You didn't need to have a degree to become a journalist until the late 70s early 80s after the watergate scandel made journalism sensationalized. JOurnalism degrees were big in the 80s and 90s but not most colleges are dropping journalism programs as newspapers hire writers whom have degrees in focused arts. It sucks because it almost makes my journalism degree useless
