Legend
There is also the old 50's TV show story of how he got his job:
On his first visit to Metropolis, a zeppelin was coming to town, but the zeppelin lost control and Lois ended up hanging from a mooring cable, dangling above the city, so in his first act of heroism he changed into his new suit and lept into the air to snatch Lois and bring her to safety. Afterwards, this scrawny little Kent fellow turns in a good freelance article on the incident and gets hired because he always seems to be be lucky enough to cover every Superman appearance.
Then again, this is also the version of Superman who bravely ignored the bullets, but when the criminals got frustrated and threw their guns at him, he dodged the guns.
But really, requiring college degrees for even mundane jobs is a pretty recent thing, and back in the 30's when Superman started, just having a High School diploma meant you were well educated, college was the province of the wealthy and brilliant, not a simple rural farmboy who was working at an everyday job (and just happened ot have superpowers and be the last child of a dead world). Most people had just a little high school, if any of that, and a 9th or 10th grade education was average. The same theme in the modern day would be a community college (which apparently is what they did in later comics), and in-depth background checks for prior employment at even wage-slave/retail-drone jobs are another very recent addition, but since the whole "decade in the fortress of solitude" thing appears to be just from the movie, and otherwise he has an airtight background, it all fits.
