How did Zork end?

I played the original Zork back in the 70s, before it was even called Zork---it was "Dungeon" to my friend and I who played it via modem on the Dupont computer.

I never got very far with it. I vaguely remember some of the treasures and rooms, but I never made it to the end. I remember some of the house and forest, and a dam with controls, and a mirror room, but that's about it.

How did that game end? Was there a way to "win"? What happened when you figured out the dam controls? What were some of the more interesting rooms and treasures?

I'd appreciate any memories of that game.

I'm assuming you're talking about the original Zork (and not Zork + Zork II, Zork III).

These classics are free to download now, you realize... http://www.infocom-if.org/downloads/downloads.html

And that's not a pirated version. Infocom just released them. I can only hope they consider releasing more of their titles.

There was a way to win. You gathered up enough of the treasures in the trophy case and you went on down into the Great Underground Empire (beginning Zork II).

Let's see... things I remember... There was a thief who was a real jerk and would try to steal your stuff. A maze of twisty passages of course. Grues, who would eat you if your light ran out (which tended to happen to me alot... especially in mazes of twisty passages).
