How do I avoid getting Stoned...

Inconsequenti-AL

Breaks Games
...by the Flesh to Stone spell!

Got to go up against something that can use that spell later on this evening. (floater with many eyestalks, rather than snakey hair version! - so not looking won't help)

I guess Death Ward doesn't work, as the spell doesn't kill you?

It does say in the spell description that it needs flesh to work. So I guess you could Polymorph into a plant/other non flesh creature... Are there any (core!) non fleshy humanoids that Alter Self could work with?

We have not got access to Stone to Flesh, even on scrolls. Are there any alternate cures, if the worst should happen?

I supose having a good Fort save is a decent start. Or hanging around in the dead magic zone! :)

Anyway - some help would be much appreciated!

I believe break enchantment works for a cure. Death ward definitely doesn't help. Good touch AC might help too. I believe the beholder must hit with any of its rays. In that case something simple like mirror image will go a ways. I'm not aware of any non-flesh humanoids. You'd probably need to find a creature with an elemental subtype for that. (e.g. gargoyle - humanoid, but a monstrous one)

Good thought on mirror image and the touch AC - I guess, even if that ray doesn't need a touch attack, then some of the others might... Time to dust off those 'miss chance' spells - blur, displacement and some entropic shield.

It's quite a novelty - have not used a 3.5 beholder in my campaign (yet!) - deliberately avoided looking at it - going to be interesting to find out what it can do!

We only know about the flesh to stone from seeing a petrified cleric via our fancy scryings.

Don't forget the often-overlooked Dispel Magic!

Remember that you can dispel any spell with a duration longer than "instantaneous"... and I believe Flesh to Stone has a duration of "Permanent".

Nope. And if it's a monster special ability, then it's most likely Supernatural and thus not subject to dispelling anyway.

I can't recall if the stalks are SU or Spell-like...

Were SU not dispellable in 3.0? I may just be losing my mind...

Flesh to stone has a duration of instantanious.

And I'm fairly sure you can dispel SU abilities from the spell description in 3.0. No clue in 3.5.

Change you body type to "incorporeal" - by employing "Gaseous form" (drawback - very hard to still cast spells while doing so) or "Ghostform" (T&B, level 5 - can still cast ). N

Depending upon the battlefield, staying out of eye-range might work ( 150 +/- a few), also a beholder's eyesight is limited to darkvison 60' so you might want to stay away from it and in the shadows/cover/woodwork - what it cannot see, it cannot 'target'. Works fine in combination with long-range magics such as Fireball, but Beholders are usually smart enough to fight indoors if they can, and quickly dispel/suppress any obscuring magics like fogs, darkness etc.

"Spell immunity" and "Spell resistance" might be good options as well - but of course a beholder has more than one attack based on fortitude saves (petrification, disintegration and finger of death.....)

Well, then... I'm 0 for 2. :( I suppose I shouldn't do rules posting without my books here at work for reference!
